Either way its a definate upgrade, anyone know how loud the stage 2 pipe is compared to the all out stage 3 loud pipe.

LoBaks

The classic chambered looks like a good design, ought to sound nice too.
Only problem is the largest they make is 3" in/out.
I have 3.5" LoBak sprint car mufflers on my 427. They have a 4" core with a center tube and 2 spiral deflectors. No packing whatsoever so the sound or performance won't change over time.
They may be a bit loud for some, especially on my 12.5/1 motor, but I love them. Just have to wear earplugs on a long drive.

Contemporary Cobra all coilover suspension... Here is what I did. First engine I had was a 428 Cobra Jet. Not bad, car was fast and nice till it dropped an exhaust valve.
New engine was a 427SO with 428 crank, medium riser heads big cam 750 single 4 barrel... When i installed the engine, lots of low end but died above 4,000 rpm very disappointed.
After thinking about the problem I did this, I added parallel mufflers under the car and took exhaust behind the collector and re- inserted it after the muffler.
The car sounds great now it screams to 6,000 no problem.
It completely transformed the car! I have had the car for 20 years and this exhaust has been on for 19 years.

I just watched a Stacey David show on TV about exhaust joint types design and sizing. If you have dual exhaust with a real 3" ID you would have trouble choking that unless you're going to run Bonneville with 1000+ HP. That's an interesting set up on your CCX, clever design you'd barely be able to see from outside the car.

I'm using Kirkham headers and also cut out their mufflers and put in Howe racing mufflers. 3-1/2" core, 4" outside diameter. I also put them on backwards so the louvers face the back and they sound awesome on my Keith Craft 496 FE.
Several others in the area have also used the Howe racing mufflers...

Here is what they sound like....This was in June in Dallas about 98 degrees out and had some crappy gas with entanol in the car and the gas was boiling in the carb so was hard start that day........now mix some 110 with it....

Are you using there mild steel headers or stainless, and do your mufflers have any sound deadining in them or is it straight pipe.

gsharapa 01-01-2012 05:32 PM

Just the steel headers ceramic coated. Howe mufflers are straight threw and when you turn them around the air restrictors that stick out to quiet them down a small bit is eliminated......

fordracing65 01-01-2012 05:40 PM

Thanks good to know, im ceramic coating my headers and still trying to decide on all out loud pipes or a quiter setup.

Cobranut 01-01-2012 09:30 PM

Clever solution, if a bit complex & heavy. Ever thought of adding a crossover pipe?

I've got a customer here locally that has bought several sets of my mufflers & one of his cars is pretty high HP - like over 600. He thought a larger flowpath like 3.5" would give him some extra punch (I can only make mine with cores as big as 3"), so he went with the Howe 3.5" core mufflers.

First off, they were so loud, he could not stand to drive the car any distance. Secondly & most important, he did not gain any HP. At the flow rate of my 3" Cobrapacks, dual exhaust with them will support approx. 1450 loss-free HP. The extra diameter was of no benefit. That would go the same for any 3" flowpath muffler with a similar core design.

Here is a comparison or sorts between the stock Contemporary exhaust and the Classic chambered with louvers facing towards the engine. Major difference in sound and performance.

Sounds impressive, whats more impressive is all that snow, 4x4cobra.

He's fresh back from his frostbite run. As soon as the roads are clear he's out driving. I don't know if he's tough or numb ;-) Good comparison on exhaust sounds thanks Dave.

I got a set of 26", 3" core, packed, louvers facing towards engine, cobra packs from Eric (Classic Chambered) last month. I finished welding up the right side, and am working on the left side (gotta work out a header to steering shaft issue right now).

First of all, customer service is great at CC. Second, these pipes are really well made. The site has great instructions, with pictures, on how to modify these, etc..
I'll report with a video when I get it started. Not sure when, but hopefully not too long from now I hope.... :)

So by turning the louvers toward the engine you are increasing the sound?

mickmate 01-02-2012 12:28 PM

That scoops the exhaust into the packing and quietens it and tones it down some.

Active Sidepipes and GT40 Pipes

Gt40 ERA active pipes are going on in Monterey Ca.
They offer Racing exhaust sound and flow with the option of switching to a Street exhaust level at flick of a switch.
They were designed and tested on a Dual Quad 427 ford with results that change DB levels 3-4.
Pics coming......
