FE side pipe upgrades
Ive heard that stock side pipes are restrictive for the big inch motors, in the neighborhood of a 50 hp gain in some cases when switching from stock pipes. What aftermarket brand pipe is on everyones favorite list. Im thinking of an upgrade.

X2 on the Classic Chambered upgrade over my restrictive OEM CCX pipes which were in pretty bad shape after 20+ years. Followed the instructions on the CC website and used my OEM collectors, mounting brackets, etc. and everything fabbed up fine. I went with the 20" x 3" packed, new turnouts and internal expanders on my 428/370 RWHP motor. No pre-post dyno testing but sensible improvement in throttle response and breathing was significant and real. Noise also increased, not terrible at low rpm/load but alot sharper at WFO. Earplugs all the time now. To do over I'd maybe go with 22" or 24" packed mufflers for noise attenuation. Great people to do business with too.

What a fish story this one is,**):JEKYLHYDE:eek: The only thing I found about this story is the pressure readings that all motors want and need back pressure to product the best power. 1.4-2.5hg is the idea area for the best of both. A 500 cubic inch motor is going to have a higher numbers than a 427 motor. There have been test done years ago with mufflers and high flow mufflers. Over all you will gain about20-40ft of torque, 35-40 HP with a BB motor at 6,500 rpm. The choice is noise. I have street pipes and race pipes. Streets are quiet. On some tracks you are allow only 98-103 decibels. Back pressure 5.8hg at 6,000 rpms
My race pipes are in the 110-115db range. back pressure at 6,000 rpms 2.7hg at 6,000 rpms. Power different is there. If you can fit 2.5" dual exhaust under the car and out the back you will have the best of both worlds. Oval pipe helps with ground clearance. Have not seen alot of info on good or bad with this. Nascar runs them. How with these magic pipes I can go to 720ft of tork and 640 RWHP with a 482 and 10.5 compression.:eek:WOW. Should buy 2 sets for when they wear out the first set. I heard a story about a guy called Jack and magic----- sorry different fairy tale. I too would like to see real life testing. Bet the 1/4 mile racer would like another 100HP in there cars. They would be running low 8.0's. That enough. Rick L. |

If you are interested---take the data numbers and plot out the 3 curves---look for nice even increases/decreases across all three---notice any big jumps at any rpm compared to numbers before and after--check to see that all hp/torque values cross at around 5250rpm |
Nothing like data tests
Here we go, I don't have 1 7/8" mufflers inlets and outlets in my street car, and at the time was not running 498 motor without any specs givin. This is about a twist of truth. Yes if you go from 1 7/8" to 3" mufflers there is going to be a HELL of a differents. Maybe a small block cobra runs this size pipe, not a BB. To bad we don't do a real test with a street ERA, FFR, and SPF BB side pipes and then see what the change is.
Jerry C.feel free to jump in here, you been racing for how many years,20+. This is the same story as a motor on a dyno testing against real street numbers at the rear wheels. In the dyno room, different size pipes from 1 3/4" primarys up to 3". adjustable collectors with 5-20" of adjustment. Carbs that product better numbers in a dyno than on the street. Mufflers can be from no chamber to 4. Magic Fuel, I will stop with this. This is the same story about air filters getting 20-30 HP at 7,000 rpms, Yes, who's motor runs at this rpm all the time. Real test shows any where from lossing 4-5 HP to ending up with 6-10hp at 6,000 rpm. There are questions with this, First what material is the inlet made from going to the throttle body, Metal( Aluminum or Plastic) Aluminum holds heat better than plastic, higher air temp less power. Location, Location, Location of the air filter and ability to get clean, fresh, outside cooler air. Speed of the air being sucked into the motor. A test was done back in the 80's with Ford Power Parts in Cali. Alot of guys here had problems with FPP, I didn't but they did a buildup of a 427SO for 600HP. They found about the same thing with side pipes and a 15-40 hp loss of power in the 5,500 rpm and up. Mdman352 what is the matter with a test outside of this companies control to find the truth??? We should all have 900 hp motors if you add on all the special parts sold out there, intake manifolds, lighter rocker arms, heads that flow 450cfm on intake and 370 cfm on exhaust. And doing this on a 4.400" center bore motor with 2.25" intake valves and 1.75" exhaust. No body is being a DICK. Just looking for the STRAIGHT TRUTH. This is the problem with this coun try and partialy why we are in BIG TROUBLE, NOTHING but lies and half truths. I hope your kids are smart, strong and bright. They are going to need this after we are gone. And yes I have a small penis,:eek: but the old lady doesn't mind.;) It gets the job done after 24 years still without drugs.:p Rick " small dick" L. I agree with that Rick, the numbers are definatly outlandish, im sure its more of a sound improvement over anything.

As far as the comment about "old" technology in these mufflers, what would you rather see in a tube-style muffler flowpath? A cool-looking object? Some deflectors (walls) like you find in a Flowmaster muffler? Some curly-cues like in a Spintech? ANY OBJECT or obstruction you put in the flowpath of a tube style muffler like this is going to cause backpressure, & backpressure will hurt performance. Granted, the proper flowpath diameter will maintain flow velocity, which you need in any of these Cobras. BUT, a lot of these Cobra kit mufflers have under a 2" flowpath diameter through the mufflers, & those are horsepower killers..............................no matter what your technology. Face it, some designs can't really be re-invented. |
Bout time you showed up! I was waiting for someone to notice they are independent test results using your mufflers. Bottom line is if it's 15 or 100 HP it's the cheapest HP you'll extract per $ invested out of your motor. The best part is you feel it in the seat of your pants where it counts.

I just replaced my stock SPF side pipes with 2 1/2" Classic Chambered 24" packed units. I also replaced the stock headers with Firefly's SS FE headers. While I haven't gotten it to the dyno yet, I can tell you without a moment's hesitation there is a much better seat-of-the-pants feel. The exhaust sound is greatly improved as well, sounds more like I think a big block should sound!

I cut out my old mufflers and put in Howe racing mufflers. 3-1/2" core, 4" outside diameter. Put them on backwards so the louvers face the back.
Got 45 HP improvement at the wheels on the dyno. (same dyno and tech) Sounds really nice now with my KC 482. Howe Racing Enterprises - Duals |
