What are you doing about baffles w/ roller rockers
Hey All,
I have a set of the Erson roller rockers and had to remove the baffels inside the valve covers. I have the Ford Motorsport breathers and it was work out ok until the foam in the breather got saturated with oil. Now I have this annoying leak from the breather caused by not having a baffle inside the valve cover. I wanted to find out what you guys are doing to fix this problem. One thought is to put the baffles back and double up on the gasket to provide clearance. If I do that, does anyone know what the rivet is called is holding the baffle in place in side the valve cover. |
Which valve covers? There are several sets that will clear the Erson rockers. I usually use the Ford Racing valve covers on those applications.

I am using the cast aluminum "427 Cover Valve covers".
I am running a BB, I was not aware that Ford racing made valve covers for the BB motors. |
If you're running an FE, yes they do....

a new engine? or did you just add these rockers to an existing build?
i had these issues and it turned out there was too much oil being pumped into the valve covers.....the baffles would hide the condition somewhat....but when they are removed it gets noticed. is the oil feed already restricted in the head? Fred |
They are baffled inside....they just don't include the breathers. You can reuse your existing breather and PCV valve. Also, I agree with FWB....if the heads are not restricted, you can drop a carb jet in the feed hole and restrict the oil.

This is an existing build. and the heads are restricted either .60 or .90 dont remember

I have those same valve covers ecept they say 427 Cobra on them.
Here is what one vendor says: Fits 352/360/390/427/428 Die-cast aluminum with baffle Black satin finish "427 Cobra" logo May require modifications for roller rockers Includes oil fill cap and grommets. So are some valve covers different height for the rollers? |
Yes, but I know for a fact that those clear. I use them on builds with the Erson/T&D stuff.

do you know what the rivets are called that have twisted threads that hold the original baffles in those valve covers. I am thinking I will just modify the baffle for clearance or even just double up on the gasket. I guess I am getting lazy and was looking for a quick, easy fix. |
From what I've seen, they are not rivets, but just self tapping sheet metal screws.

did you buy the ersons to replace the blue jobbies that were breaking?
if you have the .090 restriction you may need to go to the .060 to keep the oil regulated. this may be a dumb question, but are the shafts ok? were they worn bad when you swapped rockers? i don't mean to harp on the oil......but the VC's and the baffles may just be a symptom of the real problem.....and brent, i'm sure will have the correct solution there for you... |
The shafts were not bad at all. I just think the dove rockers were not the correct fit for my motor, cam, spring pressures.
I dissected the hell out of those rockers dove said it was the push rod length, everything except there rockers were the problem. The dove rockers are good if you running 350 - 400 lbs of pressure (from what I am told). It was recommended to spend the money and get a set that would handle the pressures that my springs were given. So I measured up the push rods several times to make sure it was correct and 1000 miles later no issues. |
I had the same issues and made my own baffles out of stainless steel that fit very close to the valve cover opening. I tapped the standoffs to 8/32 threads and used locktite to hold the screws firm. Then inserted my PCV to the grommit hole and it works perfect.
No more oil consumption period! All of the oil stays in the engine and it still allows the PCV to function and let the engine breath. I can send you a drawing if needed, PM me. Kirk |
Here's a pick of my baffle, and yes I have Ersons, with the Blue Thunder valve covers (pics in the gallery). No clearance, PCV, or leak problems whatsoever.

Are you running single gaskets. I have the same covers but when I switched to the black rubber gasket from the cork had a clearance issue. So I removed the baffle. Now I am wanting to put it back and mod the baffle. |
