question for carb experts?
i have been looking into different carbs for my 445 fe and at one time one of the kirkhams had mentioned he liked the holley 830 with annular boosters this is the one that has no choke but still has the choke horn it is under 500.00
it lists that it has a competion fuel curve. i like the carb but do not like the choke horn, i also see that holley has a nascar 830 carb with either annular boosters or with down leg boosters this carb has no choke horn but has a race fuel curve. here is my question what is the difference between the competion fuel curve and the race fuel curve and can the race curve be changed to be used on the street?. |
Hello
I have an 830 Holley on my 414 windsor and like it the most out of any other carb I have used. The engine is in a Fox body mustang and makes about 650 HP and runs 9.90s in the 1/4. The car idles great with very little warm up time. prostangrr |
which model do you have the one with the choke horn # 0-9381 or the nascar 830 # 0-80511-1
|
I use a QuickFuel 850 on a 454 FE and love it. It is much more responsive than the Holley 800 that it replaced.

The Holley 830 annular was a great carb in its day, and still is, BUT there a way better carbs out there now.
Being an early carb made of porous zinc alloy, they are plagued with issues brought on from porosity. The billet carbs, (QFT, Proform, Demon, etc) don't suffer from this, have many more adjustable features, can be tuned up AND down. The early Holleys don't have 3 or 5 stage emulsion bleeds that you can tune etc. My choice has been QFT (Quick Fuel Technology) and I will stick with them. |
race fuel requires different curves to the jetting and different emulsion tubes.
IMHO a carb set up for race fuel would be a PITA to DD |
all i need is most likely a 750 hp?, when i e mailed barry grant last year they reccomended a 825 mighty demon road race but they went under si that was why i was looking at the holley 830's. i have been told to call prosystems i like looking around and researching and hearing different opinions.
this is just a street car so i want the best driveability, i dont want a vacuum secondary carb or one with a choke horn due to height restraints, i know it is not the ideal set up but i want to run a turkey pan. |
Buy the carb you like with choke horn and mill it off on an end mill.

I have a Roush 427R. I have used some of the carbs and builders you mention.
The folks that really nailed it for me were AED Performance. AED Performance Racing Carburetors, Holley Carburetors, and Performance Holley Carburetor Parts Check out their website. You might want to give them a call. They are very knowledgable and good folks to work with. |
+1 on these guys. Very nice and top notch service/expertise

There will be no off the shelf carb that will be perfect out of the box. I promise.
If you don't need a choke, I would use a Quick Fuel Q-750. I build them custom to fit each engine...you don't have to worry about "race calibrations" or "competition" curves. You get the carb with the correct IFR's, air bleeds, jets, etc. and about all you'll have to do is check the float levels and set the idle. I dyno'd a 351C yesterday. The customer supplied a Holley 850 DP carb to go on it. We dyno'd it and it made 420hp @ 6200 with that carb. We stuck one of our Quick Fuel Q-650's on it and it made the same horsepower. :) |
You might consider checking with the Roush Fenway guys. If the Sprint Cup guys are going to FI shortly there may be a lot of top notch carbs that will be ready to hit the market from all teams.

The 830 that I have came with the choke. I milled off the choke. This is a very nice carb for street or race.

the guy at holley tech stated the 9381 has no changable air bleeds and has a old school fuel curve, the nascar 830 would be flat on the bottom end due to the circle track fuel curve.
he suggested the 82851 850 street hp?, i think blykins had it right and get a custom carb for my paticular needs. i like some of the aftermarket features like the billet metering blocks the sight glass for the float level, billet or stainless t plate. i need a vacuum source for the pvc, would also be nice to have a port to hook up a vacuum guage, i have not dropped the motor in yet so i dont know if i will have any height issues to run a 1 inch spacer. |
I can get the baseplates with a nipple for the PCV...
|
I put the nipple in a phenolic spacer ;)
