FE/Manifold Location PCV
I have a Blue Thunder intake manifold on an FE 482 block and have to install a PCV.
The question is, where is the best place to route the PCV line coming from the passenger side valve cover. I will be using an Earl's alum breather on the drivers side valve cover and an Earl's alum breather with integral PCV/an-6 on the passenger. ** There is no rear carb port and I dont have the hood clearance to add a carb plate, even a Boss 302 style. So I have 2 options: Do I use the plug on the manifold underneath the rear of the carb...........or drill and tap the cover plate (covers the 1 1/2" rear port - currently has the 5" high FE breather on it) for the fitting. Additionally, if I use the smaller hole below the carb should I reinstall the rear manifold cover plate to increase vacuum, or can I leave the breather on? Sorry for the long question, looking for someone who knows or who has already done the experiment so I wont have to, thank you.:) Best, Bret. |
If you really have to run a PCV valve I would just use the port in the back of the carb. Then after inspection you can take it off and re-tune your car.

Hi Clois,
The port is on the mainfold about an inch or so below the carb. This is on a cobra so, happily, no inspection! This will be a permanent installation to keep oil vapor from covering my valve covers. I dont really like the look of the puke tank and I'm not crazy about the road tube idea. Just looking at which option is best. Best, Bret. |

That makes sense, that PCV is at the same atmospheric potential as a valve cover (with PCV) would be. So do you have an "open" oil fill tube or a breather on the drivers side valve cover? Bret. |
Oil fill tube. Works perfectly, leaks go away.

I was having the same problem with oil blow. I used ERA Chas's recomendation & it worked wonders! Hope you have the same luck! :D

i left the 5" high breather tube and ran the PCV to the hole in the back under the carb,
you could plumb it with steel tube for a cleaner look |

I have a Blue Thunder intake on my 428. I have attached a couple of pictures of my set-up, including the basket filter under the PCV valve. My manifold is off the car right now as I am in the process of changing my intake manifold. Hope this helps. |
I tried running mine almost like M930's except with a PCV valve located in the intake, using the little steel wool basket and all. I got oil in my intake all the time. In searching for a way to keep the PCV and not dump oil into my intake, this is what I used. It's not small but hardly anyone notices it tucked back there at the back of the intake. This is an air/oil separator from Moroso. Since using this setup I haven't had any oil in the intake (or on the valve covers) and I only get about an oz of oil out of the drain after a hard day at the track or a few weeks of street driving. This is how I did it.

Bret, the plates you see guys using, mostly are dove cast ones, or made up custom.
i keep these in stock, plain not drilled for a grommet. machined from solid alum, not cast. i'm 15 minutes north of you up 7th st. if you want to see them. there is also an old for sale ad with pics. have about 30 in stock. Fred |
