Oil restrictor in heads on Sideoiler?
I am using .080" oil restrictors on my Edelbrock heads with Dove rockers.
Are they really needed?
I know that center oilers needed the restrictors because oil was fed to the front main bearing, camshaft and rockers before the remaining main bearings.
But in sideoilers, where generous oiling is allready fed first to the main bearings journals, what is the point of using restrictors in the heads ?
Isn't it more important to get enough oil up the heads to cool the valves?
I am considering not installing any restrictors, despite Keith suggestion of using .070" ones.
Any knowledge on this from anybody with sideoilers ? Anybody prevent me from doing a mistake ?
Thanks

I have a side oiler now & others in past.. have .069 now..Without the restrictors oil will build up in the valve covers and have more oil than can drain back especially with high volume pump...there is some info about in Jay Browns Book "The Great FE Intake Comparo" he did a study with and without and showed how much oil was left in pan..thundercat

I restrict, even on side oilers. Usually about .070".

Same deal.
My Pond block builds with hydraulic rollers, HV pump, and T&D rockers get a .070" restrictor. I drill and tap the feed hole for a 1/4-20 set screw and drill a hole in the center of it. It's easy to change if necessary, but that size works well for me.
If it keeps the rockers and springs lubricated without creating a flood, then you're good.

FWIW, my Ersons came with specific instructions in a bold font to use .060 restrictors with my Edelbrock heads. The designer of the Ersons had a thread over on the FE forum a few years ago discussing the issue as well. If it was me, I would just shoot Dove an email and ask him what the recommendation is -- make sure you mention whether you're running solid lifters or not as sometimes they will restrict solids a bit more.
