390 to 460
Does anyone now if I will have much trouble changing from a 390 FE to a 460? Also is there any suggestions? Thanks
|
Do you mean switching to a 385 series 460 motor, or trying to take a 390 FE out to 460 CI?
|
I will be switching to the 385 series from the FE 390
|
in a FFR? the 460 will weigh more......
|
FF roadsters were designed to accommodate either. As long as you don't run out of ambition or money you should be fine. You have to be careful of the manifold height on a 460 or any taller block Ford for that matter. An Edelbrock Torker II is the tallest intake that will fit under the hood.

Of course you know that you will need bell housing, flywheel, etc?
|
Just curious but why would you want to?

It's a great, inexpensive engine, but it's very big. I would think that if you added up all the cost to covert the 390 to a 460, for the same money you could stroke the 390 out to about 440 (you can bore it a bit bigger). Pop a good set of heads on it, and you should be quite happy. That's assuming no one gave you the 460 for free. |
i agree with olddog.....and to boot it seems you have a C-6 behind the 390..
so a new trans will be needed too....sounds like stroking the 390 would be a better buy |

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ps49132d9e.jpg I'm about four months into my build. I switched to the Torker II intake(as previously stated) and had to change the oil pan too. Other than that, steady as she goes. Good luck, let me know if you need anything. |
You know, guys, originality aside, there are a few of us who really appreciate the characteristics of a canted valve engine....the 385 series Ford engines build great power without spending all that $$ for the FE....although with the cost of a new transmission it might be a wash.
For my tastes, the 385 engine is smoother at lower RPMs, less "fussy" about build technique (especially with regard to the valvetrain), and makes great torque (not that the FE's don't, of course) in a range that is more usable on the street. If one MUST have a period correct engine, there is really only one option....and it's NOT one of the 385 series engines. Cheers! Dugly  |
For all out power; for the fewest dollars, you can't go wrong with a 385 series engine. It's fairly easy go get 700+hp & TQ. for $12K or there abouts with the 385. That is one wild ride in a FFR, but the other mods required will cost you a bit also. It all depend on what you want really? Good luck M8 ;)
