427 SO question

427 in a Contemporary. Has fantastic power, love it except for one thing.
Oil consumption. I've been in denial, so I don't have an exact number, but may be about 300 miles a quart. Yes, it drips a bit on the garage floor, but not that much. I decided to look at and replace the plugs tonight. There was what appeared to be wet oil on the threads of the plugs, but the electrodes
and insulators were all the same dry, tan to brown color. I'm not sure the dipstick is correct, what would happen if the oil level was a little high?
Any other thoughts? Thank you, Gene

what is the capacity of your oil pan? Drain the oil out, add correct amount and check the dipstick. Remark it.


plug reading can be difficult if you use ethanol gas.

A high oil level and a sump that allows oil to slosh around makes life a little harder for the rings to keep the excess oil of the bores.

If the rods are "throwing" it up there, that doesn't help either.

Good Oil drainback, well ventilated block, "normal" oil pressures are important as well.

I just discovered a bad intake gasket sucking oil in. One cylinder was trying to foul plugs, popping and skipping on that side and blowing lotsa blue out the exhaust under acceleration.

I second the intake gasket, as I had similar oil consumption rate with no other apparent leaks. Pulled the intake and the gasket was in poor shape.

While you have the intake off look at the intake runners in the head. One of our race cars with hand ported heads broke through some porosity and was sucking oil right through the head.
