Is that a vacuum pump and if so, why?

blykins 01-01-2015 07:48 PM

Yes it is. Pulling vacuum on the crankcase, especially with the appropriate ring pack can add some decent ponies....

DanEC 01-01-2015 08:21 PM

That's very nice. Thanks for posting the details.

Do heads always need to be retorqued or does it depend on wether headbolts or studs are being used to secure them?

blykins 01-02-2015 05:23 AM

IMO, yes they always need to be retorqued, both studs and bolts.

If you torque them and mark them, then go back the next day and retorque, you will find that the gaskets have compressed and the fasteners have stretched and they will torque past your mark when you redo them.

Also, this has been the only way I've found MAJOR problems in the past. I had a couple sets of aluminum heads that were not heat treated correctly and were soft. If I had not gone back to retorque, I would have never noticed it.

Ok, intake was milled, pushrods came in, and the engine is together.

What manifold is that?

blykins 01-16-2015 06:42 PM

Performer RPM.

FINALLY!!!!!

Got this one dyno'd and delivered today. The weather has been absolutely horrible around here and last week we got dumped with 12" of snow and a little bit of ice. I've been trying to get this one to the dyno for the past 3-4 weeks...

It was a good day. Got the cam broken in, inner valve springs replaced and got some good pulls in.

Final hp was 529 hp @ 5800 and 552 lb-ft @ 4250. Real sweet little engine. Had a nice authoritative idle, accelerated good, made good horsepower...

Brent,

Nice work! You should move out to California, its 70s here:-) So now for dumb question, who makes the alternator pulley? The ones Ive found and have are stamped.

Thanks,

SB

blykins 03-14-2015 05:04 AM

Came with the alternator....

DanEC 03-14-2015 06:02 AM

Wow - that seems like a very health torque figure for a stock cranksaft 427. Should be a nice street performer.

blykins 03-14-2015 06:31 AM

Generally, a tighter LSA helps make good torque numbers...
