Lykins Motorsports 427FE Build, Alan Carter

Thought it would be fun to document this build. This engine is for Alan Carter, who plans to stick it down into an ERA car that's being built right now.

Alan's desire is to build a period correct 427, focusing on originality, looks, and a moderate amount of horsepower. Upon receiving his order, I put some feelers out for some parts and scrounged up a really nice 427 S/O block, a pair of C5 medium riser heads, and a Sidewinder intake manifold. I was also able to find a C5 dual point distributor, which is now with Faron Rhoads, being restored and converted over to electronic ignition via a Pertronix module. I had a nice C4 3.780" crankshaft here that I sent off to have freshly ground.

A few goodies are already here:

*Custom Comp Cams billet hydraulic roller camshaft, 235/241 @ .050", 110 LSA, .580" lift.
*SI stainless 11/32" valves, 2.250/1.750
*Scat H-beam FE rods
*New Quick Fuel 780 carburetor, zinc-dichromate finish

I thoroughly enjoy each and every engine I assemble, but it seems like I have a special spot in my heart for the builds using the oldie-but-goodie parts.

Always nice to see an original side-oiler block in person. Every time is like the first time.... This one has been steel abrated and is waiting to be machined.

Hi Brent.
Good to see a period correct FE being built...and a non-stroker....love it! What better car to put it in as well....an ERA 427. I look forward to hearing the story.
Cheers
Glen

This is exactly the type of build I really like to see.:) But, I sure would have preferred a solid flat tappet in there....%/

Really nice parts. I'm sure it'll turn out great.

He wanted a maintenance-free cam and since he's paying the bill, I reckon I'll listen to him. If you want to buy the engine for him, he may let you call the shots.

Is it a STD bore block or close? Going to use an old LeMans crank or something else?

No, the antibiotics cleared that right up.

blykins 05-30-2016 04:06 PM

It's currently .030" and won't take much to clean the bores up. I got it from a fellow FE'er who supplied a very nice sonic map with it. It's a sweet piece.

Crank is a cast 3.780" C4 427 crankshaft.

Yes, this will be an awesome build. Looking forward to following this thread.

Old school for me. I'll be watching.:)

Bernica 05-31-2016 09:58 AM

Brent, what are you going to use for a rocker assembly?

blykins 05-31-2016 10:20 AM

T&D streets.

DWRAT 05-31-2016 03:38 PM

You should have just built a 351W and put on some FE style valve covers.
The customer would have never known.:LOL::LOL:

It's going into an ERA.
He would know.

Hello everyone, I'm Alan Carter the soon to be owner of this beast. I've been drooling over Cobras ever since I can remember and can't believe there is finally one in my near future! I'm super stoked! I've been a bit of a lurker on this forum for a long time and that is how I found Brent. He's been great to work with and I can't wait to see this engine completed!

I put my order in with Peter at ERA a year ago in May and they told me then the lead time was at least a year. My car is Chassis # 813 and hopefully will be going to the paint shop soon. I'm not sure if I'll have time to do a detailed build thread but I'll definitely start a post and give updates on my progress along the way. I have to say I am very impressed with some of you guys and your builds. I hope mine turns out half as good as some of yours!

Alan

Welcome to the madness Alan!
Congratulations! You have a great car heading your way from ERA and a great "old school" build going on with Brent. Yes, please keep us all posted on your progress.:cool:

Awesome build Brent! Looking forward to see if coming together!

Alan - Your build sounds great. You picked a color yet? You will love the ERA.

You won't have any regrets. It seems like the wait time on an ERA has grown longer - business must be good. I like your approach to the engine. :)

patrickt 06-01-2016 02:43 PM

Alan, what sort of options are you having ERA include on your build?
