What exactly is an "FE"??

I am new to this, I am selling a Shell Valley 66 replica for a friend. He said the motor in it is a 429, but somebody on another thread said that he has been dealing with Fords and FE's for over 20 years, and from the pictures I posted he said it definately looks like an "FE" to him. Please someone explain to me what this is so I can check into it. Thanks very much to all that reply.

The Ford FE engine started life in 1958 as a 332 cubic inch engine. It was subsequently produced in displacements of 332/352/360/361/390/406/410/427/428 and remained in production until 1976. The FE was the "power-block" from Ford for most of the Sixties.

The name "FE" (..according to the book, "Ford 1903-1984" by David L. Lewis, Mike McCarville, and Lorin Sorensen) was devised principally by Robert Stevenson, who was chief engineer at Ford Engine & Foundry (i.e. FE) where the first FE block was cast in 1957.

How can I tell if it is an FE motor, by certain casting numbers? Thanks very much for your help!

Cobrafreak, the unique thing about an FE is that the valve cover bolts to both the cylinder head and the intake manifold. Every other OHV American motor I've ever seen (guys?) has the valve cover on the cylinder head only.
LOL

FE (ford/edsel block):D :D

RACER X #99 05-14-2002 06:26 PM

This motor is held in high regard by collectors of antique high performance engines. Sort of todays flathead, was a big power maker in it's day but has been surpassed by todays high tech small blocks. A few diehards still race them but mostly can be found in show cars and street cruisers.

Have read where FE also stands for Ford/Edsel but you don't hear of many guys bragging about their Edsel powered Cobra.;)

Re fe

I had a 1958 Ford with the 332 cubic inch engine and every FE block has the number 352 stamped on the front left I think it is. The 429-460 engines are 385 series and have different bolt patterns for the bell housing. I just went and looked at my Torino Cobra and the 352 is stamped on the left front of the motor just below the head. I have been told by Ford that this number is on every FE engine they ever made. I also was told by Ford that FE stood for Fairlane Engine. I guess it stands for whatever the person you talk to thinks. I have often wondered what the real meaning was. Date codes are stamped inside the valve covers and on the other side of the block.

IN 1958 FORD HAD THE Y-BLOCK{ON ITS WAY OUT},M.E.L.{MERCURY EDSEL LINCOLN},F.T.{FORD TRUCK}AND THE F.E.{FORD EDSEL TO REPLACE THE Y-BLOCK DUE CID LIMITATIONS AND HEAD FAILURE} AND HOW COULD WE FORGET THE 477,534CID TRUCK ENGINES WHICH ALSO CAME FROM THE FE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM. REMEMBER THE FIRST TWO LETTERS IN FEAR ARE FE!!!

R U YELLA 06-14-2002 11:49 AM

From the horses mouth the answer is Ford - Edsel. This was the designation of the foundry group. Check it out for yourself.

Anyone here use one of the FT blocks? From what I've read, they're stronger.

This has been researched many times before. It means Ford Edsel. . . Period!

My427stang 06-28-2002 02:07 PM

It was Ford Edsel

They also had a similar motor, the 430, looked "sorta" like an FE but nothing interchangeable, called the MEL (Merc, Edsel, Lincoln)
