Default Fe Cams

Need information/advice on Cam selection
I found a new Hydraulic Crane cam with matched set of lifters for sale($100.00) for a 390/428 FE. I plan to use the cam in building my 1967 428 block (out of a 67 TBird) its not a CJ or SCJ block (This is in addition to the 428 already in my ERA S/C)
The cam specs per the seller are

Lift Duration
Intake 501 204
Exhaust 533 214

I do not have the crane part number -
has any one used this cam or one with similar specs and how well does it run the engine?

Very, very mild.

Hi ED,
This is a really mild cam!!!
I use this kind of cam in my P.U. truck, torque type engines.
It will only pull up to 4400 rpm in a 428. So if you are thinking about this kind of cam in a Cobra, it will be somewhat disappointing!!
Call me if you would like to discuss a cam selection. I would be happy to help you get the cam that is right for your situation.

Ed Rynex Jr. Hi Ed. I have this cam in in my motor. Crane part# 343901 I use it for mild supercharging. RPM range is 1500-4000. It is a tork cam. I have FI 452 motor with 9.2 compression. CNC head work done. 342 rwhp 436 rwtorque. The engine ildes at 750 rpm. It has a smooth idle. I retarded my cam 4 degrees for these numbers. My rockers are 1.73 not the 1.76's. The car has alot of bottom end pull. I like this cam but will go up to the next cam 533-566 because it is a like small. Anything else give me an E-mail Rick Lake

I want to thank, Jeff Tom and Rick who responded - It saved me from a fate worse that sleeping on a sunny day- got to drive the Cobra. I obviously need to do more research before I make any decisions on building this motor. I purchaced the motor- actually the whole car(1967 Tbird) in anticipation of building my own ERA. But five years ago I decided I wanted to driver sooner rather than later and purchaced ERA #351 from Hugh Pennel in Vermont. He and his son with the help of ERA put together my beautiful car. Unfortunately they did not supply me with a build sheet on the 428 that is in the car which I could use as a guide or based line in preparing the second motor. I haven't even pulled the motor yet. Once I do I be back to Tom for some input. OR Some of the other FE owners could share your cam experiences with me.
What cam are you using and are you happy with performance on the street and/or on the track. I know that there are many variables involved ie. pistons, rods, crank and heads as well as fuel delivery and compression ratios that will effect the final HP and Torque curves of any engine build.
Thanks for your input.
