I have asked Brent in private if I can launch our Annual Club Cobra Fund Drive. He has not responded. Actually he HAS. He responded unfavorably.
I will embarress him doing so once more. This time publicly. I have had many offers and requests to start our Annual contrubution drive. No response from Brent! What do you guys think? Should we even ask him? TURK |
Poor guy, he's TO humble. I only have one question. Where do I send the money?
Ernie |
I dont think you can ask a man whether you can pass the plate on his behalf.........but we can stuff it in his pocket and theres not he can do about that.
There is a lot of fund raising here the last couple months.....but watching our benefactor go Cobraless while we use cc to build.repair and enjoy our own has been buggin me for a while. Micheal just said what I, and i'll bet a lot of others have already been thinkin. Put it on the front page , it shouldnt take more than a week or so, and every contributor get to do a smokin 360 burnout with Brents new engine Karl |
Hey Turk,
I'm in! :JEKYLHYDE Tom |
Turk,
A little further thought ;I think most people hear trust you to hold. use a sticky, collect the $ and post the names of the contributors on the same sticky you dont mind do you :D |
Count me in, If I can help put a side oiler in Brents bullet!....Great!. Where do I send?.
|
Turk,
You're right, Brent's too much of a gentleman to ask, or even encourage this. Therefore, his feelings on the matter irrelvant! This is to make US feel good! If he has to suffer by accepting some extra cash after everything he's done for us, well, that's a sacrifice he'll just have to make. Last time we sent the dough to you--do you want to do that again? (HINT) TT |
Crap. I'm becoming a typoholic. I'm not even going to fix them this time.
TT |
Turk,
Count me in, where do I send the check? Steve D***ey |
You guys....Turk has been sending me notes from people wanting to help out for a while now and it's truly touching. I just don't know how to accept stuff like this.....I just feel like I should work for dough, and this is more of a hobby than anything. It feels wierd, but truly a super gesture. I just don't know what to say.
Just got back from checking out the engine. Here's the scoop.
He'll sell me the short block for 3k or complete, including stock cast iron 427 headers for 5k. |
Hobbie's gone wild!
Mostly stock parts, which is fine, it'll have plenty power and be the "right" motor. I'd keep it mild, which means the 390 heads will be fine. Two fours are over kill, but wouldn't they look great! Won't need the headers.
So what do you get for 2K more for the long block? Heads, good, BIG chunck of the 2K right there! Exhaust manifold, no $$$ to speak of. Intake manifold, sounds "original", $$$ maybe $500? Rebuild two old carbs and when done, questionable reliability? BUY single carb intake and ONE new carb? $$$?? Benefit would be max reliability! Add one turkey pan and your still looking "correct"! It's going to be tough to beat the $2K window if you have to buy heads, pushrods, rockers, intake and carb. I'd go for the Long Block and CONSIDER replacing the intake with a single carb unit and one new carb. That long block DOES come with pushrods and rocker assembly I hope. Those "little" items can add up real quick! Get EVERYTHING you can for that motor! Brakets, motor mounts, scrounge a few parts off the bench to "throw in" with the deal. Flywheel? Clutch? Get it ALL. "Little things" will kill you later! Ernie ....you ARE working for it. |
Shortblock is without heads manifold or carbs...the longblock is everything.... The headers are R code galaxie headers, and it looks like they have sold recently for 700+ on ebay...I don't need them though. I would likely sell the manifold and carbs if I go the long block route, as I have a turkey pan, etc...

Brent, is there any way you can get the numbers off the crank, cam, pistons and rods, we can find out what this bad boy has, sounds like a very good price since he intended to use the S/O for 'his'
project. Hell, I've seen a 68 block go for a lot more than that, lucky find....... |
I'll see about getting the numbers. He said it wasn't a forged crank (stock one with the motor appears to be cast by looking at Steve Christ's book). Cam is new comp cams solid.
|
Sleeved? Repaired? Cracked? Have it checked good, and if it checks out, the block alone is worth $5000.00.
I know!! TURK |
I learned at a very young age not to ask questions that either;
A). You know the answer to.. B). You don't care what the answer is.. or C). Someone already gave you an answer but you are looking for another answer... It has served me in good stead particulaly when I knew the answer was the right one.. To this question I know the answer.. That's why I didn't ask the question.. It's the right thing to do.. I posted a thread in the All Cobra Talk forum.. Hopfully it catches on.. If not I will post it again.. Please feel free to do the same in the forums you visit regularly. |
It's not sleeved, and it's not cracked, as he had it magnafluxed. I'm going to pull the pan tomorrow and check for additional casting numbers on the pistons, rods, and crank.
|
I have a set of 1968 390 GT heads you can have if you would rather.. They are rebuilt with 3 a angle valve job, new guides.. Stock 2.09 / 1.65".. If I put these on a 427 I would replace the valves with light weight units and get a better spring.. But the machine work is done..
|
OR.. I have a C3AE9425 dual quad intake you could have. Take your pick.. Door #1, Door #2 or Door #3..
|
Brent,
If you are can buy that engine for that amount and it is what has been said so far. BUY IT. Don't worry about the pistons, rods and crank. It won't matter. Sell the guts on eBay, keep the block. Have George build it for you slowly at your pace with parts that are new and predictable. That is too valuable a block to take a chance that previous owner/machine xhop did everything exactly like they were supposed to. You already had one bad experience with a poorly built engine, this one is too good a block to screw up. Run the 390 until this one is put together from scratch. that is my suggestion. TURK |
