Yep, it was me who said that. That's based on what I see them sell for on ebay, and what FE engine shops sell them for. When I thought the Sidewinder was the "correct" intake for a proper Cobra engine, I was looking all over the place for them. I still see them on ebay all the time. I have never seen one sell for over 500, and 400-450 seems to be the norm. Now the correct 65 medium riser intake, which looks like a Sidewinder but with a centered carb, sell for close to 600 in nice shape. I went with the Blue Thunder intake, since it visually looks like the correct meduim rise intake, but with better performance, and cost less new than a used 40 year old Sidewinder.

Wow...did not know there was so much to the selection of an intake!! This must be one of the BIG issues! Right now I am cranked about Blue Thunder and Edelbrock.

Original Ford HIGH RISER 2X4 alloy intakes go for about $600-650 dollars. Thats about as rare an intake as your gonna find. I would guess an original Ford tunnel port would sell for more and be even harder to locate.

Well, if I go Edelbrock...I know what to get...7105 Performer RPM. Whats up with Air Gap stuff? Saw a tv show the other night where they were making a big deal about it. Also, is Permastar the same intake, just with a different finish?

What about a fourth option - the aluminum police interceptor intake - supposedly an alum version of the cobra jet? Any word on this?

Yep, you can use the 428 PI intake as well. It's basically the same design as the 65 MR, BT, and Edelbrock Performer. The thing I don't like about the PI, is that it's not machined to accept the oil fill tube/breather, and requires you to use valve covers with breathers installed. They usually sell for about $400-$450 as well. Here is a 428 PI intake on ebay, that's mistakenly listed as a 427 medium rise:

Read that e-bay listing...kind of odd to make an engine "concourse ready" when the body itself is a replica.

BLUE THUNDER! can't believe no one mentioned it.
I strongly recommend the Blue Thunder 4V intake with a mighty Demon 850 with down leg boosters. Blue Thunder offers the highest quality of any intake I have seen and has an original look.
The other option is a Edlebrock Victor, The FE motor has so much torque that it will still be strong on the bottom and even stronger on top. Most engine builders will agree with this statement. Morgan |

Market Correction Post: Not trying to brag but I just sold my "Sidewinder" to a fellow in MD who is competing in NHRA superstock and this is the ultimate legal intake of choice down to the date code - Price? try $750 + Shipping & Packing.:D Nice pieces go for nice prices - paitence is simply required!

He did not post shipping charges on the bid page, and it is my fault for not thinking about that, but after the auction, he emailed shipping charges of $40. Added to the win price, that comes to $278 for a used intake. Jegs sells a new one, ground shipped for $304. I checked UPS, and shipping should not be more than $25. I realize it is not that big of a deal, but it bigs me when sellers use shipping to make money. Anyone ever shipped an intake like this? What did it cost you? We ship UPS every day. Don't know how heavy the intake is but to ship as an example 35# to the farthest zone which would be maximum is $23.85. I think it's $1.00more if it goes to a residential address. Insurance to $100 is free. After that it's .35 cents per hundred. $2.45 would inusre it to $800.00 A box and packing are usually pretty easy to come by in my opinion. It just depends on who you're dealing with. Hope this helps.

Don't feel too bad about the shipping. I live across the big pond and have to be real careful with the ebay shipping - got burned on some seat belts - sad when the price suddenly doubles due to shipping.:( |
