Let's talk 390 truck blocks....
I have the opportunity to buy a complete 390FE out of a 1974 truck. Complete except for carb.
I know truck blocks were a little different. Would I have a problem with rebuilding this for a Cobra application? Performance parts a problem?
I'm hoping this one has the steel crank in it....and truck blocks are a little beefier, right?

You will probably need to get a distributor bushing so you can use an aftermarket distributor, unless you are going to use the stock one. It will be really sloppy without it. From what I hear, the truck blocks can be bored 80 over (maybe someone else can confirm this.)

Actually the only FE's that are different are the ones in HD trucks.Their designations tell them from regular FE's,like 331,361 and 391. The 390 that would be in a pick-up(1/2,3/4) and trucks up to about a ton would be a regular FE, no different.If it is a 600 series truck then you have one. If it is designated as a 391 then it might need the bushing ,but all the others are one and the same. The main differences,that are desirable, are the forged crank, but they have to have the snout machined to accept a regular balancer. Castings aren't any heavier as far as I've seen, and the heads are really small posted.

Sounds like a good cobra engine. Likely under $350 too.

I'm debating on it. I really don't need it right now. I got an engine sitting in the car. Shoot my car isn't even finished. But just something about it. I have a nice C7MEA 390 block sitting and waiting for me....I've had it magged and sonic tested....it's a perfect candidate and can be bored safely around .060". However, I can get this whole engine for about $20 more than what I paid for this block....hehehe

Guys, I found out more about the engine. It's out of a 1974 dump truck. Could it possibly be a 391? It's 6 hours away from me, but it would be worth it for the price.

All truck engines in trucks bigger than a 1 ton would be a FT engine not an FE. FT engine will have 105 cast into the left front corner just like the FE's have 352 cast into them. The only thing usable from an FT is the block and the crank with alot of machine work on the crank and maybe the block as well. 391 FT's crank shafts have bigger front snouts,wider main bearing journals,and thicker rear flywheel flanges.
