Rare Wedge Bellhousing???
Has anyone seen or heard of one of these? It appears to be from Mickey Thompson (M/T), made by Wedge (who made the original COBRA ones), is cast steel, is two piece (unlike original COBRA ones), and setup for an older style starter that has about 6" of rod for the gear to slide out on. It also appears that my Kee toploader would bolt up to the inner set of four mounting holes. I want to put it up for sale but don't know enough about it to tell a person what it is...

Are you sure that's not for a MOPAR? From what can be seen in the picture it looks like the starter cone is on the drivers side, a sure indication of a Mopar bellhousing. The early '60's Mopars were referred to as wedges also (Max Wedge,etc.).

It's no Mopar...it lines right up with my FE. Starter is on passenger side...here's another picture to clarify:

It's mickey thompson circa 1966-1970. NHRA approved. Not terribly rare but a nice find. Yes all ford 3 and 4 speeds will mount right up. The starter has more to do with the engine it was behind. Wedge is simply a reference to the FE or 352 style block.
Sand blast it clean up the threads and you'll likely get $150-200 for it. (these are no longer nhra approved) I see this one was blue. I often see them red. I'd give you $100 as it sits provided the threads are in good shape. |
I don't see too many Mickey Thopmson ones. I see the ANSEN blowproof 2 pc bell more often. Do you have the bottom cover also? I'd also be interested if Mike does not want it. Pretty cool item. G.

Michael, it is missing the bottom cap / inspection plate. All I have is what is pictured: bell, block plate, and starter. Do you know where I can get the bottom cap? One could be easily fabricated, I think.
I guess I'd rather clean it up, chase the threads, and paint it...then see what happens on eBay. But I'll keep your offer in mind and will entertain any others... |
The bottom cover is the same material as the bellhousing. Not like the Ford tin ones. G.

No... that would be a rare find. You can fab one out of plate steel and or sheet metal like a standard inspection plate. It's certainly functional enough to save your legs in a clutch explosion as is. It is more cool than functional anyway. How often do modern clutch and or flywheels let go...

Michael...so the bell is "not terribly rare" but the inspection plate is "rare"...;);););) Just jackin' with ya'. :) I honestly don't know anything more about it than what I've posted thus far. Thanks for the feedback and if I don't sell it outright, I'll post a link for the auction.

Just hard to find by itself. Even if you knew what you were looking for it would be easy to miss. The one that came off this bellhousing is probably buried in the muddy driveway (under a foot of snow) next to a rusty old fairlaine someone pulled the bellhousing off of when the engine was pulled.. I'd start looking there. Probably next to the passenger door. They backed the fairlane in to pull the engine... The inspection plate was on the ground between the car and the fence. The car is probably white with rust spots.

Yes it was pretty funny as I stumbled onto it. I was telling a buddy of mine about the bellhousing and he said he had the bottom cover for it. I'm waiting to confirm it's M/T but looks very good. Even if it's a ANSEN cover I may be able to adapt it. Not very expensive either which helps. Good luck with the auction and I'll be bidding on it for sure. This should draw a good crowd. G.
