break-in lube
I am going to gradually assemble my engine and am concerned about the cam lube, etc that I am using. It is a red lube that came with my Comp Cam.
The engine will probably sit for a couple months before being fired-up and already it seems that the cam lube is dripping off camshaft. I don't even have the crankshaft in yet. Question: How long will the lube be effective ??? Will a film be enough ??? I'm not as concerned with my bearing lube and such. It seems like it will stay in place just fine. I will be doing a pre-lube to pressure oil everything before fire up. And I do understand about the 20 minutes of 2000-2500 rpm to splash all that oil onto cam lobes. Thanks Dave |
It should be fine. mine sat for four month or so and I just turn the motor over by hand every couple of weeks

I to am concerned about that, so my approach has been "final assembly" followed by a quick installation. I have heard "rumors" from various sources that it IS a good idea to install and start as soon as practical after assembly. In fact I think Comp Cams is one who also recommends it. Out of cam lube? "Torco MPZ" will work fine!
IF I was going to wait "sometime" before starting I would not bolt down tight the rocker assembly (no pressure on the valve train). You would also be able to pull each lifter and re-lube on the bottom of each shortly before "final assembly" and startup. Storing it for awhile? A little Marvel Mystery Oil in each cylinder couldn't hurt! Leaves a better "film" than engine oil does and penetrates to every crack and crevice.
