Thermostat Diameter
The hole in the intake manifold is larger than most thermostats. Is that normal? What thermostat diameter, number & make are most people using? Does anyone make one 2 1/2"? Thanks Ken

Go to Napa...tell them you want a number 91 thermostat ( or look it up on their page) That is the 165 degree 2.5in model. I think the 191 is the 185 degree...there are 3 different ones. But I KNOW #91 is the 165 degree.
Standard..."what's it out of"....well nothing original, so you can't look it up. So tell me if you have it....
"well, what's it out of?"
did that all weekend until I found a parts guy at NAPA that was a Ford nut....

I am using it with a low rise 427 intake with 2/4's manifold and a standard FE Surge Tank. You guys are great!

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but best I remember when doing mine was ask for one for a 1968 Ford truck with the 352 cu.in.

I think I always tell them a '62 Galaxie with a 352 or 390.

Ken,
I would recommend against anything other than a 180 with the steam hole trick for your new FE with aluminum heads. Gotta keep it in the sweet spot if you want it to run right.

Yeah....I am running iron heads and need as cool as I can get. Arrumimum heads are easier to cool for sure

The oem thermostat for an older Ford has a large disk and a small valve . The Chrysler thermostat fits .Has a large disk with a large valve like the balanced thermostat mentioned earlier.I went through this a while back. My car had a cobeled up arangement.Old large brass disk with a slightly smaller chevey thermostat glued in.I finialy found that the Mopar stuff works.

OK, I checked it officially. Napa part for the 160 degree is 91 and the 180 degree is part number 191. There is a 170, but I forgot the number. If you go in to napa, they have a book with pictures of the thermostats, and find the number 91 and 191 and they will have the other number listed there with it. The clue is the 2.5 inch diameter...it is the only set of therms with that diameter in the book. It was an exact match for mine...

Thank everyone for all your input. I ended up buying a 180 degree Nappa part # 532080 , $7.69. It is supposed to be "Nappa's Superstat" , a Premium Thermostat upgrade to Nappa's #91. It is also the same one used in a 440 Mopar Engine. Everyone was right this time. Thanks again! Ken
