Default Which oil pan?

I have a CSX 4000 chasis with a 428. Can someone reccommend a pan? (for street use mostly) Moroso, Canton?

I use the Canton baffled 8 quart road race pan on my 428.. I paid $290 on Ebay, brand new complete w/ pick-up. It's a nice piece.

Me too - get the windage tray and pickup with it and remember to get 2 pan gaskets...............and remember to notch your dip stick before you put it on!

Why two gaskets and why notch the dipstick? The aviaid pan looks great but is kind of pricy. Thanks for the replies.

The windage tray is sandwiched between the 2 gaskets( block/gasket/windage tray/gasket/oil pan). The stock dipstick will hit on the windage tray before it goes down into the oil pan. You can notch the dipstick or bend a sideways arc into it like I did with mine.

The oil level will be different from a stock pan and you need to keep it below the windage tray but well over the top of the pickup. If the oil level is above the windage tray you will get foaming and defeat the purpose of it. Mark the dipstick to insure the level is above the pickup but just below the windage tray.

The Aviaid is nice and period correct but the price is more than 2X the Canton and I'm happy with the cheaper oil pan. First clown that climbs under my car and rags on me about the oil pan will have bellhousing tracks all over his forehead..............

The Canton pan holds eight quarts. Canton recommends you put eight quarts in the engine and mark the dipstick where the oil level shows on the dipstick. Use this as your full mark.

With the Canton recommended 8 quarts in mine the oil level came up to the the "OEM" full mark on the dipstick. I didn't have to make a new full mark on it.

Keith (Craft) is installing an Armondo Oil Pan on my FE. He told me that it is the "correct" pan for the SO.

Undy, that happened on mine as well! I thought it was just a fluke or something. Interesting.

8 in the pan, 1 in the filter, total 9 qts for me, stick on the 'Full' mark. Road Race pan, only way to go!

I would say, for the FE, the Aviad, Canton or Milodon pans would fit the bill rather well.

The attributes you want IMHO are: oil capacity; good ground clearance; an oil temp bulb port and rear oil drain plug. Additionally, you want something fairly sturdy should you whack something with the front or the bottom of the pan. The Milodon tend to have extra "armor" on the bottom and front from what I have seen.

Those cast aluminum pans can crack if you whack something with them while the fabricated pans tend to bend or dent. So, I would stay away from any cast pan (ie: the cast Shelby / Cobra pans).

I've got an Armando pan. For those who don't know, Armando is an ex-Aviaid guy (from what I've heard) who makes the same pans on his own, but at a better price. I think I paid about $100 or so less than one from Aviaid.

Aviads have been my choice but, the quality #1 then price. Armado sounds nice. Don't need leaks or bad looking welds though. How do they look? Trap doors as well as windage tray?
