Best Fe Parts.

I am new to the FE world. I know that the 427 was the most powerful of the FE's. My question is what are the best FE heads and intake manifolds for the 427? I know there are low-risers, medium-risers, high-risers, 2x4's, tunnel ports, single and dual planes, but what intakes and heads made the most power? I want to build a streetable 427 with lots of power, but am not sure what engine to build, etc. Kinda thought about a genesis blocked Tunnel Port or High-Riser. Not sure if the old iron stuff would work well on the Genesis block.

SOHC, TP, HR, MR, and LR in that order.

SOHC makes the most power. I understand that a 1x4 is the most drivable

TP 2x4 dual plane (very rare, ran on GT40 at LeMans)
TP 2x4 single plane more power less drivable (although on CSX3104 ran great.)
TP 1x4 single plane (runs good, but does not make power like it should)

HR no factory single plane made (Dove has made some)
HR 4x2 IR 58mm extremely rare most power
HR 2x4 intake used on Thunderbolts very tall, good power
HR 2x4 intake less power than above but fits under most hoods
HR 1x4 intake more drivable than above

MR 4x2 48 IDA great power once carbs are right
MR 2x4 single plane (great intake, rare, $$$)
MR 2x4 dual plane good intake used on 428 PI GT500
MR 1x4 dual plane "side winder" runs great

LR intakes are all dual plane and not as good as MR versions. Although the 428 PI, and CJ (iron) manifolds are very good.

Tom,

I have access to some parts. A man near where I live has a set of 427 tunnel port heads, and a 427 1x4 tunnel port intake. He also has a set of 427 C4AE-F heads and a couple 427 high riser 2x4 intakes. Not sure exactly what intakes they are. Here are some pics.

this is one intake he has.

First one looks like a 2x4 High Rise, and the second one looks like a 2x4 Medium Rise. I could be wrong though.

nvr2muchpwr 07-30-2006 05:48 PM

I was told that the top intake is a tunnel wedge intake and that the bottom was a high riser. Could be wrong though.

nvr2muchpwr 07-30-2006 06:30 PM

what combo do you think would go best on a 'streetable" Genesis blocked engine?

Excaliber 07-30-2006 06:34 PM

Top one, Tunnel Wedge, I've heard that name but have never seen a good pic of one. Perhaps tunnel wedge is another name for Tunnel Port, which has ROUND ports (by the way). Bottom 2X4 gotta be high rise, mediums have a heat cross over tube missing on the high rise.

My High Rise came off a Thunder Bolt car, 2X4, I find it quite acceptable on the street given the right carbs. Hood clearance, engine mounts and air cleaners ARE something you have to deal with. It BARELY fits.

Tom Kirkham 07-30-2006 08:00 PM

The top manifold is a 427 MR tunnel wedge. It will not work on a TP. It is a very rare and desirable intake manifold. The bigger the engine the more streetable the intake will be. That manifold would work great with a set of E-brocks or Shelby heads with a Scat stroker crank.

nvr2muchpwr 07-30-2006 08:48 PM

How much power do you think would be realistic out of a 500+ ci engine with high riser heads and the tunnel wedge intake? I am kinda trying to stay with a "stock" look. How much better are the E-brock heads? What about a set of blue thunders with the tunnel wedge intake?

Do you care if the intake/carb/parts stick up through the hood?

nvr2muchpwr 07-30-2006 10:25 PM

Well, I don't think that the parts will stick up through the hood because I have a fiberglass "teardrop" hood and I believe it will fit under the "bubble". If not I am not too concerned about it sticking out of my hood. But I think it will fit under the teardrop hood. I guess what I am trying to say is that I really don't car if the parts stick out of my hood.

So is a Tunnel Wedge like a Tunnel Port except it has square ports? I noticed the Tunnel Wedge pictured above will also require a valley pan.

Yes, and your are correct.

The 'valley pan' is just a flat piece of sheetmetal that's screwed onto the intake from the bottom.

nvr2muchpwr, the teardrop on your hood was originally made to clear a high riser setup. You might look into some ported Edelbrock or Blue Thunder heads, depending on your budget. You can make 650 hp or more with the right parts.

Tom, roughly, how much hp loss is there with the single 4. Does this mean I should unload my single 4?

I had thought that Ford came out with the TP 2X4 spider intake first, then, came out with a similar version for MR heads, therefore calling the intake a tunnel wedge.

nvr2muchpwr 07-31-2006 07:50 PM

I was told that the top intake is a high-riser tunnel wedge. I'n not really sure as I'm not extremely knowledgable about things FE, but that is what the gentleman told me. I bought both manifolds, a 2x4 tunnel port manifold as well as a set of C4AE-F heads, C3AE heads, some C7OE-K tunnel port heads and some 427 Medium riser heads all for $5000. Not sure if I got a good deal, but I know some of these parts are rare and I couln't pass them up. I love casting numbers books. I'll post some pics of the stuff when I can get to it.

Woodz428 07-31-2006 09:46 PM

First, there is no such thing as a high riser Tunnel Wedge. Secondly I find it interesting that you seem to have "purchased" the very same parts that "the JOKER", whom I believe is a Troll like yourself, was listing in another thread. It is also interesting that HE claimed to have a '66 Fairlane, but listed a GT350 as his ride and you list a '66 Fairlane as yours. Are you sisters??? I think you and him are just wasting the time of people that are trying to help REAL people with REAL cars with REAL questions. I know,Waaa, waaa, you are just looking for help and you don't no nuffin' about no FE engines and you just happened to "buy" some very desirable parts that happen to pics from an old Hot Rod article. So... this is where you threaten to go to some other forum where you can be loved like your sister, Joker. Get Real Fool.

Dove actually makes one, although Ford never did like you said.

Both photos are lifted from the DSC Motorsports web site. The only way to find them is by searching by their description. What's the real reason for the message since you've already knew what they were?
