Nice Cobra Ed.
Good thing to look at for problem.

double ugly 11-07-2006 04:33 PM

I just talked to Brian Duffee at Duffee Motorsports here in AZ and he found the cause of my oil leak. It was the center galley plug but he will replace all of the plugs since he has the access. After a lot of work ($$$) chasing the leak hopefully it will be reduced to a drop or two after standing overnight. The plugs are press fit not screw in which may explain part of the problem. Thanks for all the help and advice. This is certainly a great forum.

That's Great DU.
Please report back on what happens.

Burgs 11-08-2006 08:17 AM

You're talking about the back of the motor, behind the flywheel, right?

double ugly 11-08-2006 09:18 AM

They're behind the fly wheel. A real pain to get at when one bolt on the scatter shield isn't accessible. Brian welded a fitting on the bolt head and spun it off and replaced it with a proper allen head bolt.

I have seen teflon tape used as a thread sealer and fail once things heat up and are pressurised.

I thought so.........glad you nailed it down, territorial marking by an engine drives me up the wall.

So far after sitting for almost three hours, not a drop on the floor. I hope when I check it in the morning I can still say that.

still no drips?

double ugly 11-13-2006 07:18 PM

Still no leaks after several jaunts of 60 miles. The only thing on the floor is a little antifreeze. I'm waiting for the coolant level in the surge tank to find a happy place. :)

IT'S BACK. ^%$$#@!$$%%%^ I checked uder the car last night, after a fairly brief trip yesterday, and I have oil on the floor again.......
Maybe its the tranny this time.

lineslinger 11-21-2006 01:09 PM

As much as before?? Same spot being marked? Oil and not tranny fluid?

pmfranke 11-21-2006 01:23 PM

this is why i haven't tried to find my oil leak ! I feel for you.

Eljaro 11-21-2006 03:40 PM

The advantage of a moderate oil leak is that it will keep your car underside well oiled and free of rust:D
As I get older I find myself worrying less and less about the paint chipping off here , or the light scratch or dent there and now I am trying to adapt to the oil leak and see it as normal (remember the british motorcycles ?) and life is great so.

I drove the car today and got the temps up. Looked under the car and saw no leaks. Crawled under and felt the bellhousing and backing plate. Absolutely dry. I can not figure out where the oil on the floor last night could have com from. Really crazy.

Ron61 11-22-2006 05:35 AM

Don't feel bad. I have hunted a leak that drips about 5 drops a week on my floor for 30 years. This has been going on since I bought my 69 Torino Cobra brand new and it still has the original tires and just over 40K miles on it. I have used dye, completely dried and cleaned the bottom of the car so many times all paint is gone and I had to repaint it, and had numerous mechanics put it on a lift and try to find it. Replaced all gaskets and everything that I can think of and I still have it. I have came to the conclusion that this particular 428SJC just manufactures a few drops of oil to aggravate me. I have even put talcum powder all around the side of the block from front to back to see if I can find a break where oil came down and nothing. Also pulled the inspection plate so many times it comes off really easy now and it is dry as can be inside. I now have a very minor water leak near the front of the intake and if that has to be pulled to stop the water leak I will look at all the gaskets again. But for the few drops of oil I have always had fall, it just isn't worth all the work, especially since I just slide a piece of card board under the car and then wipe the oil that has dripped over a period of time off when I drive it.

Ron

With British bikes and cars, it is just their way. These things are like big dogs! They are not leaking oil, they are just marking their territory!:)

Maybe one of the other members, here, is just trying to drive you crazy, by slipping under your car at night and leaving a couple of drops of oil. Time to set out claymores and trip lines!

I am in agreement with the theory that someone is putting the oil there..wife, neighbor..someone is messing with your mind. We did a similiar prank on a friend...he was bragging about fuel mileage...we added a little bit of gas to his tank each week...then we started siphoning some off for awhile...told him he was losing his mind and need to take math 101 again because the numbers just didnt match up.
He never did catch on.

Naumoff 11-22-2006 07:25 AM

DU, at this point I would break out the concrete floor right under your car and install and oil recovery tank so you can put the oil back in your engine.
Might save you a few bucks a month.  ;)

double ugly 11-22-2006 07:26 AM

When I told Linda this AM that the car was completely dry underneith, she said that she might have put some oil under there. She was kidding. Wasn't she? Ya, she was.
