Default 1966 428 PI with 427 stamp

When the car was at Duffee Motorsports (replacing galley plugs on a 1966 428 PI) here in AZ He told me he saw 427 stamped on the back side of the block. Anyone know why that would be there?
Thanks, John

Default same casting, but different machining.

The 428 in my previous car had that, and a friend's 390 X block had that. I researched it through all the best FE books and back through different Ford people. We actually found several blocks like it thereafter. Most said the same thing that many of the blocks came from the same casting as regular 427s or something to that effect, including markings, but were ultimately machined as 390s or 428s - if that makes sense. It was kind of a maze of responses and the more people we asked the more it seemed like some things they did back then were just kind of intermixed to just get things done however it was needed at the time.

Thanks for the quick reply. For a moment there I thought it could be a 427 SO and could a a few $$ to the price of the car. Oh well, still no leak after the galley plugs were changed. There was one screw in and the rest were press fit.

D-U,
How do you know its a 428PI? What are the engine block ID numbers, it would be fun to look it up. It does not have cross bolted main bolts by chance, does it?

That's what I was told it was. Where are the codes I need to look at?
Thanks, John

Depending on what year the block is, you can check the pads on the side of the block or up under the starter. Locate all the numbers you can on the block and if you can send me a PM on CC and I'll look it up on the trusty old blue/yellow FE book many of us have. It will be interesting to compare notes from my old motor; it always puzzled me that I never really got a straight answer from anyone on these 427 embossed blocks - just guesses or general information is where it ended.
