New kid on the block.....

Great site and excellent communication! I am excited to be here and have some questions for the experts!

I am currently accumulating parts to build a 427 wanna be (or as close as possible), for performance street use, stroked 390 with a 428 crank. I have the 390 block, .020" forged pistons, re-conditioned rods (polished beams, shot peened, re-bushed) by Speed O Motive, 428 crank, 390 SFI flywheel, Comp Cam 290 dur./545 lift (Hyd. flat tappet), GT-390 heads, Original aluminum intake Tri-Power set-up.
Questions / recommedations:
1.) Can I use the 390 flywheel with the 428 crank? Does crank have to be re-balanced "0" internal?
2.) What roller rockers?
3.) What headers?
Thanks in advance for your help!

1) NO, You need a 428 Flywheel or have it Zero balanced.

2) Comp cams roller rockers will work just fine. Or go with Pumpbuiler on a nice set-up.

3)Crites makes a good set of headers for your Gal.

Some Q's for you!
1) What block do you have (cast #'s)???

2)Whats your budget?

3)What do you want out of your engine? Is it Street/Strip? Just Street?

4) Depending on your block, Have you thought of making a 428 and not a 410?

If you want to build it and forget about it, I'd use a hydraulic roller cam. No maintenance, no break-in times, and no flat lobes because the cam didn't break in properly. More and more people are having trouble with cams these days and since the GM EOS is being discontinued and more and more oils are leaving the zinc out, I wouldn't dream of using anything else than a roller cam. The extra expense is worth it when you think of the possibility of wiping a cam, then having to totally disassemble, clean, replace parts, and reassemble your engine.

As for roller rockers, you get what you pay for. I have used (and would use again) Ersons on FE's. It's the best bang for the buck and they will take 800 lb spring pressures. IMO, the only better ones are T&D's.

428's were externally balanced, so you will need a flywheel that's weighted appropriately. Some of the nicer flywheels like Fidanza are zero balanced, but come with bolt on weights so that you can adapt it to other scenarios.

I assume this is going in a Cobra, so you will use the headers that are specific to your car.
