428 cobra jet vs. 460

i was wondering if a 428 cj or a 460 would be a better engine for a street rod. i am putting the motor in a FORD 1972 short bed single cab pickup. Also i was wondering if you hopped them up which one would have more horsepower and which one you could rebuilbd for less money, and which one would be less maintenance?

please give me any advice you have

The 460 would be cheaper, would make more power, and have comparable or less maintenence. Anybody can get good power from them, and you can stroke the snot out of them cheaply for big cubes.

That's why I build FEs.....

I'm doing a 68 f100 shorty.
Got the truck with a 460 and it's coming out.
It's a 76 which I'm assuming came out of a car as the C6 has the long tailshaft. The headers are butched in... Just don't like the setup.
I picked up a rebuilt 75 360 that's going in stock for now. It's a D4TE block which will eventually get a 4.25" stroke, aluminum heads etc...
There's just nothing like a FE.

It takes very little to get that 460 up to 600 HP and will cost half as much.

With aluminum heads, intake, flywheel, water pump, etc. my FE is within 50 lbs. of a stock 289. Honestly, when it comes to fitting a Cobra, you can't really compare a 460 with an FE.

428 CJ man You might want to check out the FE forumn for info to start. A standard FE motor is 70 pounds lighter than a 460 iron motor. Why do you want a 700 pound anchor in the front of you car. It is easy to make 600 hp with either motor, but Aluminium motor FE will weight 470. A SVO 460 block is about 15 pounds heavier. FE is a smaller engine to fit in a car or truck in the bottom end. Save your money and GO ALUMINIUM. Sell the other motors to restorer builders. Rick L
