Every winter we use Marvel in the cylinders and rotate the motor and let it sit ....... and also fog the motor before we shut it off with Marvel.....and valves look like new....
Motor was built in 2004 and now we are rebuilding and everything looks great....... just like new...... and we beat on it fairly good..... Morris |
car4jim, I think the directions are one once for every 2 ˝ gallons or four ounces for ten gallons. I checked out in the garage and do not have any cans out there to be sure but the directions are on every can when you buy one. I just use an old paint measuring cup or just a plane six once drinking cup that can easily be bent to fit the gas tank nozzle and fill it about two thirds the way up, maybe a little more. “If a little will do good, a lot will do better.” :) Never felt that you need to be any more accurate than that.

A few old timers I knew used Risolene as well.
One big help with carb'ed engines is to disconnect the fuel and run the gas out of the bowls so you don't get varnish setteling in the metering circuits on long set-ups. Since we're talking about oil anyone know why you shouldn't run motor oil refined from north eastern crude oil? NE crude is parifin based, SW oil is asphalt based. I can't tell you how many gunked up Quacker state and Pissoil engines I saw get clogged topsides from this gunk. Never knew exactly why till a guy I met with Ring Power told me about their oil analisys program's findings. I've always used a 50-50 mix of 50wt and STP engine oil treatment for engine assembly. Never run STP though, stuff's like snot. |
Years ago my Mom always used Quaker State in her Buick since new. Eventually the motor developed some problems and my brothers and I tore it down. Whew, what a mess the top end was. Looked like it was filled with ashes or something, rockers all glued together and stuff, quite ugly. I swore I'd never use the Q again after that! :D
In all fairness, she never did drive faster 40 or 50 mph and a LOT of 'milk runs'. |
Would this be good to use in a brand new engine?
|
I use it to oil my pneumatic tools and in my SU carburators.

This thread got me wondering about MMO, so I did a little surfing and came up with the following info:
Marvel Mystery Oil - Moyer Marine Atomic 4 Community Slick 50 and other ail additives I used MMO while rebuilding my FE and it did seem to "stick" fairly well to the bores. I haven't and probably won't run it in my engine, since I agree with some of the observations in the attached. Those being that in the crankcase I believe it will affect the viscosity and temp qualities of my oil and I see no advantage in running it thru my fuel system and would tend to think that "burning oil" with fuel would cause deposits. I would suggest using a fuel additive formulated for cleaning as an alternative. Just my opinion, Mike |
I've used one ounce of MMO per gallon of aviation gasoline to add the lubrication missing from the av gas. Seems to work just fine. I also had a friend, back in the day, that would add it to his Healy Sprite's gas so he could run regular instead of high test. The engine would ping without it, on regular.

Boy, I remember the 'slick 50' hype, cure all, fix all, HP boost.....BS.
As stated earlier, MoS2 and the new Tungsten Disulphide (WS2) Powder, both of these beat everything else. Please, do your homework.... |
What would Mobil, Castrol & Pennzoil, GM and Ford know about motor oil? From now on I'm going with Marvel Mystery Oil (by Turtle Wax).
By the way, what percentage of MMO is kerosene? Bob |

I don't think I'd use MsO(2) to coat the bore and pistons during assembly instead of oil. Or, would you? :D
What would Castrol know about oil? Well they recently WOKE UP and smelled the coffee and created a NEW (or would that be OLD?) oil specifically to address the flat tappet cam application (again, like they used to). 'Modern' aint all that all the time. Does Ford even make a flat tappet motor anymore? |

They make gloves for such things you know... :D

Like I said Sharpe, do your homework. By the way, my quote referenced 'slick 50', not MMO.

Back in my dirt track days, the cars that ran methonal fuel, added MMO as a top end lubricant cause the alcohol fuel is so "dry"...we ran gas in our car, but did occasionally put MMO in the gas, don't know whether it helped or not, but I don't believe it hurt anything, only added a little more lubricant to the top end of the motor........
BTW; have not used it in years except for my air tools........ When putting a motor together I use Lubriplate as an engine assembly lube......Since it is a piston engine aircraft assembly lube, I figured it would be o-k in my V-8 motors....an old aircraft mechanic told me about this, he uses it on all engine assemblys from a 3hp Briggs/Stratton engines to his 460 cu in motor in his F-250............... He also told me when "fogging" a motor for long term storage, he uses atuomatic trans. fluid......starts the motor, keep it running while slowly pouring about 1/2 quart down the carb., then shut it off and pour the rest down the carb and manually turn the motor over 3 or 4 times and your good to go...... Well I am surprised at such a nice reception for Mystery Oil. You could make a strong case for better newer modern products. It's kind of cool to see an old standby still holding it's own and it's varied uses, kinda of like modern Cobras. Not for everyone, not for everything, but pretty nice to have in the garage. :D
