427 S.O. smoke
Lainhart brought his 427 S.O. Cobra to my shop today for repairs / changes. It is smoking out of the passenger sidepipes when he accelerates. It does not smoke at idle or cruise (40 -55). But when he accelerates from 30 to 70 it blow a lot of smoke from the passenger side only.
What do I need to check first? Dwight http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...m/DSCN1110.JPG |
Leak down test. What color is the smoke?
|
white smoke.
It did not smoke when he parked it last fall. Dwight |
Oh Oh, probably coolant
|
DO A LEAK DOWN TEST. DO IT AT OPERATING TEMP. and then a comp. test. that should tell you something
|
White smoke = bad. Probably coolant as mentioned above. Might want to try re-torquing he heads. Could be the intake gaskets.
|
White would suggest coolant, RHS would suggest intake manifold on that side, were the intake bolts checked before startup after the winter hibernation, gaskets tend to dry out & shrink when not in use & FE is more susceptible to this with so much gasket area subject to oil spray etc.
Also have seen vacuum brake booster with faulty diaphragm cause heaps of white smoke- might not be relevant in this case. |
Are you sure it's just the passenger side with smoke and not both? You have a mini oil accumulator sitting on your valve cover. Get rid of the passenger side breather/PCV combo that's sitting on the pass valve cover. Just run the PCV into the cover. This is slowly accumulating oil and then pulling it into the intake when you accelerate. Take it off and check inside for oil.

My bet is that it's a leaky intake manifold gasket...especially if the builder used Felpro Printoseal gaskets on it.
|
I agree with the "FailPro" gaskets. The intake gasket water ports on the Felpros are very subject to gasket creep. High cooling system pressures and a loosely torqued intake manifold are recipies for cooling system disasters.
My money's on an internal coolant system leak, usually intake gasket related with the FE. Retorquing usually fixes squat Dave |
I am in the process of having my block decked because of a similar issue. White smoke while accelorating meant coolant in the cylinders for me. Fix it now or it will cost you more.

Loose bolt
I found the rear intake bolt on the passenger side very loose. I retorqued all the intake bolts. Tomorrow I'll drive it to see what happens.

The intake gaskets will leak at one of the corner cylinders. The gasket seems to move or deteriate with the anti-freeze and then leaks into number 1,4,5 or 8 cylinder. This why they will normally just leak on one side and it is normally out one of these cylinders. Good luck, Keith

gasket
Keith, when I replace the gasket, which brand or type should I buy?
Dwight |
I'm not KC, but just in case he doesn't respond, I would try to find a set of Victor Reinz or Mr. Gasket gaskets that DO NOT have the silicone around the perimeter of the port. You could also try Corteco or ROL....but the FE guys seem to like the Victors.
|
If they're not one of Keith's CNC'd Eboks then I'd definately go with the Victor Nitroseal intake gaskets. They have a sandwiched stainless steel center that eliminates gasket deformation. The part number's 95159SG.
Dave |
I recommend, use and stock the Victors for heads using traditional sized intake ports. the Fel-Pro low riser passenger car gaskets - MS90145 - will not match the ports at teh lower edge but will still seal up and work well.
The Fel-Pro race gaskets are just that - good for race stuff 'cuz you can trim them to fit various ports, but short lived in street use. They will stay put longer if you use adhesive to stick them to the head, but they'll still fail eventually. The FE is the only V8 I know of that has the intake flange effectively submerged in oil... |
Gaskets
This motor has out of the box Edelbrock heads and intake. Will the Victor Nitroseal part number's 95159SG work for this set up?

thanks for the info
It has rained the last two days. Maybe Friday I can take it out and see if it blow smoke. Car cruise in Tenn. Friday night and a Car Show in Huntsville, Ala. Saturday. Everybody pray that it does not rain. Please:) Dwight |
