A hammer will fit this!

After working out a lot of small problems it was time to put the engine hood on and after having the expansion tank lowered as much as possible it STILL HITS THE HOOD! Maybe I should take a hammer to the corner......any suggestions....were all the tanks the same or was there ever a smaller one?

Is it the cap that hits? Anyway, I think you can shorten the tube that extends from the bottom of the tank to the thermostat flange.

the tank has been lowered as far as it can go.

Argess 08-24-2009 06:28 PM

and backed up too I presume.....strange.

Got the correct rear tranny mount installed? Maybe a higher one?

Front motor mounts? Can anything be done there? Thinner mounts?

Wish I could help more......sorry. A call to your kit manufacturer might be next

I would like to find a pair of thinner mounts....know of any?

patrickt 08-24-2009 06:34 PM

There are indeed different size (meaning height) expansion tanks. ERA won't sell you one, but there's a pic and description of their specially lowered unit on this page: http://erareplicas.com/parts/cooling.htm

I had the neck cut down and it is as low as possible. the thought of a thinner motor mount to drop the motor maybe 1/2" would be great...but the bottom of my bell housing is 3.5" off the ground. I could trim it like ERA does!

Funny you should mention motor mounts, I was tightening mine up yesterday. ERA uses the two bolt mounts from the 1964 Galaxie. They will fit both early two bolt blocks, and the 1965 and later four bolt blocks. I don't know about "thinner" mounts.

Here's my two bolt motor mount. I don't know whether it sits lower than the three bolt motor mount used in the 1965 and on cars.

How much more room do you need to clear your hood?

i could use another .5" I thought about raising the trans but that would change the angle of the drive shaft

Well, I hate to tell you to beat on it with a hammer... but that's probably what I would do.

Okay, do you have to have the tank?

I mean is there another way to handle this without the tank?

I would love to have a 14 inch x 4 inch air cleaner, but it does not fit, so I do not have one ( this is where Pat shows us a picture of his ).

Is the engine back as far as it will go?

saltshaker 08-24-2009 07:47 PM

to move the motor back is more difficult then having a radiator shop separate the two half's and remove .05" out of the height of the tank. I could also remove the tank and use a inline tube with a filler neck and a over flow tank.
I liked the tank and have built the car according to the manual...It would be nice if things would start to fit correctly.

toss the tank you dont need it there tanks on the sides of the radiator already, use an inline radiator cap and hook it to an overflow bottle.

my upper hose is on the drivers side.....where do you find a neck that goes to the left?

This neck goes to the left.:p Seriously, have a radiator shop split it and shorten it down.
