Need Help Oil leak behind intake

Hello all,

I have the body off and noticed that there is a oil leak which seems to be coming from the rear of the intake manifold. I have search on the forum to see if there is a any good threads showing how to resolve this problem but I could not find anything.

I spoke to Barry from Survival and ordered a new intake manifold gasket that is supose to be new and improved.

The oil seems to be leaking from between the intake head and block area. It then runs down, what seems to be the joint where the head and block come together. It then sits on a small ledge and finally drips and lands on the floor.

Now when I assembled the motor I did not use the cork gasket on the ends or front and rear. I basically used silicone and I am assuming I missed a spot.

So now I want to fix it since it will be probably be the best time.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle this as I dont want to do this with the body on and freshly painted.

**************Also, do I have to lift the intake or can I just run a beed on the back end of the intake and block to seal it ?

Hello Priobe.
If i remember correctly the new and improved intake gaskest are supposed to be a steel reinforced sandwich type from felpro and they make them for ford racing as well.

yes that what Barry explained. Does this correct the intake leak that many experience?

ALso, do I have to lift the intake to correct this or can I just reseal the intake from the outside.

For the best seal, R & R it.

I knew that was going to be said

I have webers and will have to resync the carbs.......darn

This is why I did not want to remove the intake. Oh well

I don`t disagree that it is best to remove and fix ... however , it can be fixed on the car , but it is a pain . Had that problem on my 427 Galaxie . Make sure you know exactly where the leak is and then degrease that area thoroughly... and then do it again . I used The Right Stuff and applied it so it covered the back of the intake , the corners of the block etc . Let it dry overnight . Be generous with the application . It wasn`t pretty , but it worked ... and it was on the rear corner of the intake up next to the firewall . I also taped a mirror to the firewall so I could see what I was doing ... and remember , everything will be backwards .
So far , its been there for several years . Make sure it isn`t a valve cover leak first .

Remove the entire manifold WITH the carbs........eat your Wheaties first.

Priobe,

I had the same problem with my 427 s/o, I removed the intake and cleaned all surfaces to new. I applied The Right Stuff and allowed it to tack. Re-installed the intake and allowed a 24hr cure before re-starting. Do not use RTV sealants with cork gaskets.

Why not re-torque to spec?

Question:

Is this oil that is sloshing around in the intake area that is really not under any pressure. In other words is this oild that is finding a way out of the cracks in the silicon when installed?

I have the body off and not really able to start the motor, but now is the best time to fix.

Even if I were able to start the motor not sure it would leak from just a idle running.

Think of it as "pressurized oil vapor." And yes, it can find it's way out of the smallest hole imaginable.

I did the samething as Bobcat and I also used Great Stuff. The NAPA store owner told me when I ask " how good is this Great Stuff ? " his answer " If they had this on the TItanic it would still be afloat"!!! yES IT WORKS . But the problem I have is the Ford intake does not mate all the way down as it should with the new Edelbrock Heads. I will need to shave a little off of the intake to get it to fit right and set down properly. You may discover you have the same problem. Good Luck .
