New guy here!
Hiya folks... new first time Cobra guy here. I have so many questions and so little space to type. Let's start with a general question. I live in the Great Lakes area and have plenty of connections in the automotive industry. I'm looking to buils a 427 frame to original specs. I hear Cobra Restorers (GA) sells the prints for $200 and I may just go ahead & order them. (Unless someone here already has a set they would like to share or sell).
So my question is.... has anyone started a frame project from scratch? Any words of wisdom?

Hang in there. I know there are folks here that have done it. At the very least there is the Kirkhams and Bob Putnam from ERA who both build a accurate frame. Of course I don't know if they want to give up any trade secrets! With a set of blue prints the frame does not look to be all that complicated to build. I would take that on before I would try doing a body from scratch! Of course you could just buy one of those.

Sounds like a cool project! I wish I had more room in the garage to build more projects

ERA does not build an accurate frame at all.This does not mean it is not a good frame,just not like original cobras. chuck

Chuck... help me out here,.... ERA? (I'm new to this) Is ERA the same as Cobra Restorers? If not, do you have any comments on their frame? Or do you know of anyone with scaled blueprints for sale.

Oops. Missed on the ERA. Kirkham is a dead ringer though. I know you can buy the blue prints but I do not know if they are scale.

To my knowlege cobra restorers is the only company selling blueprints of the original frame.Kirkham is the only company that produces accurate reproductions of original frames that I know of.That is an ambitious project for you and I do not want to disuade you from it, however, unless you are going to use an aluminum body your net gain(aside from personal accomplishment) will be little.Talk to David Kirkham about your project,he will help any way possible I am sure. chuck

What did we ever do before the internet!?!?!
Yes I understand that welding up a frame is a lot of work....however aside from my time it's how I shave the cost of the project. Metal is cheap! And the resources are available to me. I sent e-mails to Kirkham with questions. Maybe you guys here would know... but can a fiberglass shell be put on a Kirkham type frame? Or should I go Aluminum?

Julian try kirkham's cobra in a box. they're looking for 25 test subjects to build a cobra from their parts ask david about it it is a great deal if your looking to save dollars

Saving dollars? Don't even go near Kirkham for parts! 
If I were to make a replica Cobra from SCRATCH I would seriously consider the ERA frame. AND I would seriously consider buying a used Jag IRS unit to mount in that frame.
Alloy or Glass? NO contest! Gotta be glass. Alloy will put you over budget in a heart beat! |
