Funny you should mention ZF's I have -2 in mine that was rebuilt by a 20 years experience + in the vintage auto industry. In fact he is the one I boutght my Gt40 from. I looked at RBTs but were 9,000.00 +not including the extras. My car started with the Getrage and came to the conclusion that it just was not strong enough to handle 400BPH for a very long time. So I came across 3 that I bought over the last year and a half. Currently they are being rebuilt with all RBT hardware and the upgrades. I was going to keep them but decided I won't need all of them. These Transaxle are very strong. I was very impressed with the standard ratio's.There has been alot of speculation regarding a lower final gear. I cruise 65MPH at 2,200 RPM. Gears 1-4 are nice with good power shift range. My engine is 530BPh and the ZF with handle every pony. I had the gear shift fabricated to a solid shift rod. It bangs into each gear smooth and strong. I have tried the Cable...Some cars seem to be shift good but personally I think it's a little sloppy for my taste. I also like when I shift Hard with a ZF, it throws you back into your seat when you let the clutch out. That is what I want with the confidence your are not going to break anything. Getrags are fine to get around town but if you push it, you soon will be pushing your car. One big seller on the Zf was that you use cluth and fly wheel to standard Ford sizes. Alot of guys that bought the RCR cars are finding out the hard way that all the shift linkage on the Getrags need alot to be made to work. Among alot of other things. You Get what You pay for I guess. For just about the same money you can have a ZF. So to anserw your question.. ZF"s are the way to go. Let me know if you want one. One more thing. My guy that is rebuilding the transaxle is the same guy most of the RCR guys are going to because he is a expert with getrags Also. Best of luck! Oliver

Actually I have a RBT ZF transaxle but the shifter is sloppy,I will check and see what linkage I have. I agree that a cheaper tranny is only cheaper in the beginning and short sighted in the long run. Funny how things often work that way. thanks again ; chuck

kevin - One thing I did not see posted was your height. I have driven the SPF GT40 and although a wonderfully finished car, is way to small for my frame. I had to angle my left knee/leg and wedge into the only space it could still operate the clutch. With that said I'm a shrunken 6'4" fella (age droped me from 6'5" ). Just something to think about...
Fitmit issues aside, I think I still would prefer the Cobra. The looks of the GT do move me but that's about where it sputters out. Before doing anything drastic with your car I'd suggest getting a ride in one - preferably driving it. Best wishes! How's my old Sig Erson rockers doing? It's been a long time. |
I'm the opposite, 5'8" on a bad day, 5"9" when I'm feelin' young. I would definitely want a ride in one and to visit Fran & see the shop before I would sell my cobra. I'm really just feeling everything out before diving in. Can't be too carefully, especially when I love my car (for the most part) hust like marriage, good day's & bad. LOL ! This endeavor, would hurt my bank account even more than I thought. We'll see what happens.
The rockers are working perfectly ! I adjust the valves twice per year. Don't really need to but, I like good maintenance ! The motor is very healthy & sounds awesome. Thank bud, Kevin |
