GT40 Engine Pics

Hi Guys,

My first time posting in this forum.

I have an SPF GT that has shipped from South Africa and on its way to NorCal and my garage. I am in the last stages of having the engine put together and wanted ask if you guys could post some pictures of your engines. I am trying to decide on valve covers and wanted to see some of your engines in the car for input.

My GT is painted in Gulf livery and has webers on top of an aluminum dart block based 351.

Gt40 Valve Covers

Tony-- You've got my dream car coming your way. Hopefully, I won't be too far behind you on getting one on order!

My favorite valve cover is the classic Gurney-Weslake versions.

Contact Chris Melia--- melCHRISMELIA@aol.com

He's got a shipment arriving this month---I think they're $400/pair.

Lots of ways to go on your engine, congrats on the purchase! Chris is in the UK and definitely has the GW covers as mentioned. There are a lot of engine pictures in the "Member Rides" area here:

http://www.gt40s.com/forum/member-rides/index.html

And a large number located all over the forum if you kick around. Also have a look in the gallery:

All sort of depends on what you wish to do with your car/motor. Enjoy!

Thanks Guys,

Don, I am using an aftermarket drive valve train that sits higher than any of the stock pieces ---- How much room is there with the GW valve covers?

BTW SPF has just increased the price for their roller by $10K.

Where could I see a picture or get dimensions for them?

Rlearp -- Thank you for the links.

Anybody else have pics from the top of the engine bay or the engine?

G/w Valve Covers For Gt40

Tony- I would suggest emailing Chris for dimensions. I believe he told me they would clear conventional roller rocker valvetrains; but if you have something exotic like stud girdles, etc. it might be tough. I think somebody makes a spacer for those applications but that might just be one more place for an oil leak. I have seen some pretty neat "sheetmetal" valve covers and there are sources that can "etch" anything, any color, on them. I bought a set of low end Moroso covers for my 427FE and had a custom plate etched in three colors with a Ford logo and 427 script and bonded it over the Moroso name. I got a lot of compliments for very few $$$.

Thanks Don,

I emailed Chris and waiting for some dimension info......I am using a valve train that has end stands and girdles along the entire length, the dimensions of the GW covers would be a concern.

Good thought about etching a plate and bonding it onto a roomier set of covers.

Here is a better shot of the valve covers. Keith Craft can put just about anything you come up on a set for you. These are the ones he delivered with my motor, he said he wanted to put his name on them and I said sure go ahead. There is a good chance I will go with the Gurney-Weslake valve covers at some time if they fit.

Looking for a different picture, I'll post more when I find it.

I have a set of GW valve covers and they require significang grinding to make fit aluminum rockers. I actually prefer the simple gold or silver 289 steel covers

Fran Hall RCR 01-04-2007 05:41 PM

We have installed the GW covers many times with no issues at all...I guess it depends upon which roller rockers are used......

Thanks for the replies,

Here are two pics of my engine.

With Ford Motor Sport Polished Aluminum Valve covers

What do the GW valve covers look like, I was looking at an original set of those heads this morning but, no idea of what the valve covers look like.

I wasn't aware that Gurney had valve covers to fit standard small block heads. I have GW heads w/valve covers on my ERAFIA (see gallary) but have never seen any other type.

Can someone post a picture?

Jim

Tony Ripepi 01-05-2007 02:30 PM

Thanks Jim,

I like the look the issue now is will they fit on my engine with the roller rockers.

TR:

I have roller rockers. But please note, the Gurney Weslake (Gurney Eagle)heads are totally different than the normal small block heads. The valve covers on my motor will not fit on a regular small block head.

The GW covers that Chris reproduces are for modern SB Ford heads. They are to give you the look of the GW engine.

What about your trans axle?

TR,

Have you gotten the transaxle yet? A ZF? Where did you get it or where are you getting it from? Let us know about this piece of the puzzle. A few are looking for these transaxles and are not getting them. Just curious.

Good luck on your trans axle search.

Gurney Weslake covers

Hi guys

my valve cover fit the Small block Ford heads and will clear roller rockers, I have sold many sets to GT40 owners without problem.
People that have exotic valve gear or extra high lift cams above 1/2" may need to do some machining.

Chris,

Please PM me with contact information in order for me to get set of your GW valve covers. I assume if they will not work with my roller rockers I would be able to return them, as long as I do not damage/modify them in any way.

Juan,

I have a ZF transaxle sitting on the shelf at the custom shop that is going to build out my GT, the unit I have is a replacement part for the ZF that was used on the BMW M1 with a 3:77 ring gear.

The shop that is building out my car has more ZF transaxels in Stock. The owner is Steve Wilkinson and I did not want to post his contact info until I had his permission, he is in Southern California and has been in the Pantera custom build/rebuild business for 30 years.

Here is a link to his web site and contact info, please let Steve know you got his info from me if you do decide to contact him.

Hope that helps,

Tony R.
