Holley HP Ultra carb
Anybody using the new Holley HP Ultra carb, if so how do you like it, any pros and cons of the carb, it almost looks like a Quick Fuel carb with the same options, any help greatly appreciated.

Both good carbs. Quick Fuel gets a slighter nod in price.

I've used Holley's Ultra Double Pumper for the last year. Right out of the box it worked without any tuning. If I may ask, why are you looking at the HP series? I believe HP series are vacuum secondaries. When I was shopping around for my carb, all the mechanics and factory reps I spoke to suggested to get mechanical secondaries for a Cobra with a manuel transmission. They claimed that vacuum secondaries would not always open to WOT with the combination of a light car, a street/strip cam, and a manuel transmission. I am by no means a mechanic, but that seemed to be what everyone was telling me that was in the business. Plus, the Ultra Double Pumper has an electric choke....

I'm running one of the HP ultra 950s on a 468, seems very responsive out of the box. will tune mixtures later with a LM-2. getting the idle right (transfer slots just uncovered) was easy using the idle air bypass adjustment.

We have had a Holley Ultra HP 750 on a Dyno Run with a Stroker Small Block Chevy of 423 inches. The Ultra HP works so well right out of the box. You really almost don't need to touch anything. The Engine Responded great to the carb and it really worked well. Make sure to read all the paperwork. I think Holley has some 20 improvements over past carbs. As for the Quick Fuel Carb, I have been a fan in the past but it seems that there has been an ownership change since the company was started and we have had problems with several Quick Fuel Carbs this Summer.
I have two New Quick Fuel Q850s for engines that I am working on now and don't know if I should keep them and take them apart to check things out or return them and buy Ultra HPs. |
Send them to me if you need them tweaked.
I've never had any carb whatsoever work perfectly out of the box. They are meant to be universal and you can't expect them to work as well in New York as they would Arizona. I did a back to back dyno test of a Holley HP Ultra 950 and a Quick Fuel Q-950 on a 445W and the QFT netted 11 more horsepower. That's with them both being "tweaked". |
Holley needs to check their calibrations, I've had 2 carbs with the primary screws 1/2-3/4 turn out, and the secondaries 2+ turns out, and know of someone else who had the same setup. Also, the last carb had the butterflies closed with no t slot showing.

If you buy a custom carb through Braswell, AED, me, etc., then they should be closer than most, but they still need a little lovin'. You can't pull one out of the box, drop it on, and drive off into the sunset.

QF carbs massaged by Brent are quality products and he stands behind his work. Mine is over 2 years old and works great. But you will always need to adjust the idle mixture screws for your engine when you get it.

I just met Marvin from Quickfuel, we talked carbs for about an hour, let's just say I learned a ton about carbs and his carbs. I am now even more biased towards the Quickfuel, he even gave me a free t-shirt...:cool:

New to this forum and adding response. Hope it's of some value. Dyno'd just finished 427w, AFR 225 cnc'd heads, stepped 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 to 2" headers. First few runs with QF 850 netted 548 & 552hp, but A/F ratio was showing need for more air flow...being on the dyno my time to react was limited, could not find a QF950 but found a Ultra hp 950. Gotta say, out of the box A/F was more in align and hp jumped to 596 & 592 on two more runs. David |
