Need MSD Distrubutor Recommendation - 351w 385HP Crate Engine
Hi,
I am going to replace the distrubutor that came with my 351W 385 HP crate motor. The motor was built in 2000. Any suggestions which would be the best MSD distributor to replace the stock one? I would also be okay with a distributor that is not MSD as long as it performs well in my motor. I would greatly appreciate your help in giving me some options. Many thanks. |
Take a look at this distributor by Progression Ignition.
Hands Down, best distributor ever!!! https://progressionignition.com/ |
If you have not already done so, make note of the camshaft metallurgy
(cast iron vs billet steel) so the correctly chosen distributor gear is used. |
My well known engine builder insisted we use MSD pro billet.

I have had great luck with Pertronix and no separate box.

Progression ignition distributor dosnt use a box.
Everything you need is built right in the distributor with the added bonus of infinite map creations that are created thru an app on your phone and sent instantly thru blue tooth to your distributor as you drive. Also has a lock out feature so if someone try’s to steal you car they cannot start because distributor is electronically disabled until you re-enable with your phone. Cats ass of distributors. I replaced my MSD with Progression Distributor, couldn’t be happier!!! https://progressionignition.com/ |

if upon returning to your car, the phone is lost or phone battery is dead? |
You call progression ignition and they give you the code to the distributor you purchased for you to install in someone’s else’s phone so you can unlock
or find a charger and charge your phone. Or just don’t lock out distributor and use a battery cutoff switch like I do. Minor issue vs huge plus in timing control. |
That Progression Ignition system reminds me of the Mallory Maxfire distributor. Looked good on paper but was prone to failure due to the engine heat on the circuit board in the distributor.

I have had my progression ignition for over 2 years now.
Many times i have been stuck in bumper to bumper traffic idling with fans kicking on and off sometimes for over an hour in 100 deg heat Heat and has never been an issue. Talk to Ted at Progression Ignition and he will fill you in on his proprietary materials used on the electronics that make heat not an issue. |
I replaced an MSD Ready-to-Run distributor with a Progression unit two years ago on my 427FE. The RTR distributor was causing misfires once it was heat soaked and obviously close to failing completely. I wanted something different than MSD and decided to try the Progression unit. I've been very happy with it so far. It cured all my problems and the tuning flexibility is a great benefit.
