So I changed my oil for the first time with this new billet aluminum oil pan. When I took the drain plug out and the oil rushed out, I thought I had most of it out. It seemed like not very much, but the thought never occurred to me that the trap door in the center of the pan was holding back the oil from the other three chambers. The oil was flowing into the trap like it was supposed to, and not leaking out of the trap, like it was designed to do.
Anyway, with out thinking about it, I decided to take the pan off, just because I could, and I'd wanted to see the inside of the engine. So I pulled out all the bolts. To my surprise, that bottom piece of the pan felt rather heavy. It turns out, that the other three chambers were chuck full of oil, as was the center trap area. So basically I only drained maybe 3 quarts of oil from the drain plug, and there was about 6 more in the pan still. I guess what I'm getting at here, is for those who have this new oil pan, when you change your oil, you may want to take the pan apart and get all of the oil out. Either that, or drain the oil when its hot, and let it sit for a few hour or over night, just to make sure you get all, or most of the oil out. Imagine what would have happened had I not taken the pan off. I would have only drained 3 quarts, then I would have added 9 more to the system. Anyway, call if you have questions. Sandwich |
Sandwich, thanks for the heads up on draining the oil. Sounds like the pan and traps are doing the job they are intended to do.

What is the right dipstick tube and dipstick for this pan? The one I had on my Canton pan had a threaded connection from the tube to the pan.

We use a very common Big Block Chevy dipstick from the local parts house--just cut to length.

OK, this is probably a stupid question, but how does the bottom of the tube seal to the pan since the pan fitting is smooth and not threaded? :o
I did find the Spectre 5720 dipstick reference on the Kirkham site. |
