kmp0927 build

just got home from the promised land and all i can say is wow! i will not even go into the experience of picking up a car from Kirkham. Just being inside the place where they make something i have had dreams about for so long. Dave is pretty cool and takes customer service to a new level.

Anyways she is in my garage and my part of the build is on.

ill post up more as it goes along but here are a few photos. We got some tricks to try on this one and we will see if they work. New way to have a brushed car and keep it clean!

So the car is a 427sc brushed, she will have a stroked 427 sideoiler iron block with a TKO600 Trans.

Stunning

If I could have my choice this is exactly how I would build my next Cobra...

Congrats I hope you have a ball with this!

You're gonna love it.
Where about in SoCal?

Congrats! I have 845 and I had a hard time deciding between polished and brushed. Your car looks great.

If it were me...

Just a lowly SPF guy, but if (when) someday when my kirkham ship comes in, I would do brush & paint ; always thought brush with just slightly contrasting lemans stripes would really pop...white grey or even a contrasting silver...mmm

If what we are doing works then it could be the start of a new brushed movement. Then again if it doesn't then might need to polish it.

I'm in south oc.

Sweet! Always good to have another Cobra in the SoCal area. Hopefully your KMP will be getting lots of exercise out on the roads!

There is at least one other Kirkham down in your area that I know of. Hopefully you will be able to connect with them. (PM me if you want to share contact info).

This is KMP #927, even if 926 of the prior Kirkham Cobras go "brushed, I'm not sure that's considered a "movement."

Notice how I said "926"? That's because once you go polished, you never go back.

I went to a car show a couple weekends ago and got the typical question of "Is that chrome paint?"

Best of luck with 927, please post updates.

Not really what I was trying to say....doing soemthing to the brushed finish that will make it easy to clean and maintanace free IF it works. Just having the car home for a few days omg you can't even look at the brushed with out a mark popping up

Congratulations on the Kirkham, aeon

Using a liberal amount of windex as needed, every couple of weeks works well for the brushed finish.

Interested in what you do and how it works. I find that the polished part of my car is easier to keep looking good than the brushed stripes (really hard to get water spots etc out of the brushed parts). But either way they look great.

I have given some thought to painting my car at some point (a dark shade of blue) and leaving the brushed stripes as they are, with a clear coat over the whole thing. Not sure the clear would adhere to the brushed finish.

The Wrap is done and WOW! it worked and worked rad. Total Tint in lakeside Ca. pulled it off. quite a few man hours to get it done but in the end it was worth it.

You had the whole thing wrapped with 3M clear ?
I think I like it !!

aeon 05-25-2018 10:56 PM

The material was the clear bra stuff. It had a name I can't remember. The stripes were just normal wrap material. They are under the clear.

rodneym 05-25-2018 11:48 PM

Interesting. It will look brushed...and reflective at the same time.
I'm curious to see how long the wrap holds on to a rough surface.
Glad it worked out for you!

I’d be curious to know if the aluminum will still oxidize under the wrap.

Buzz 05-26-2018 10:23 AM

Wow - interesting project! Body wraps/stripes on Cobras has been discussed before, but this is the first I've seen on an aluminum body.

Exposure to oxygen is required for oxidation, so it shouldn't - unless of course the wrap material is porous.

aeon 05-26-2018 04:00 PM

the material sticking is of course a big worry. the whole process to get paint to stick with etching then alodine is a huge pain. They have wrapped aircraft with this stuff and have not seen failures or any change in the metal...... its looks great almost like it got shot with a clear coat. The film did stick much better than i though it would. they said it was sticking better than paint.

Phx Mike 05-26-2018 05:05 PM

Very cool - will be interesting to see how it holds up. I have also thought about hard anodizing the entire body but don’t know how that could be done on an entire car body. So I mustn’t stayed with the polished finish!

And my question still stands.

The typical wrap lasts about 5 years, probably more on a show-type car with low miles. The wrap must deteriorate over time.
