I didn't know anyone would be interested. I will start posting some pictures! The machine is about 100,000 pounds. It will be a real trick to get it into the building. I can't wait to see it put together. The machine is HUGE!

David

What brand is your new five axis machining center? We have three five
axis Mazaks at our shop. Would love to see pictures of your new machine.
Good luck with your block project! I know how much work is involved in
a project of this magnitude!! :MECOOL:

Gerry,

The mill is a Sunstrand 5 axis mill. The travels are 48 X 65 X 66. 66 inches of Z! The A axis is +/- 150 degrees, B axis is 360 degrees.

We got it with a pallet changer. The work involved with this project grows everyday!

We pulled it out of a Naval research center. They said it held 0.0001 inches in all axis. We are really happy with the machine. It is built like a tank.

It came to us on 3 semi trucks. The picture here is of the main column which arrived on the last truck this morning!

It is a horizontal mill so the "Z" axis is sticking straight up right now in this picture. When it is assembled, the "Z" axis will stick straight out at you (we will stand this monster up on end).

The man in the picture "Sandwich" gives you some sense of the scale of this baby.

Dean,

Machines for "special devices" aren't nearly this big!

(At least for the action part).

Damn,
A car from an ex-Russian Mig Factory and a block from a ex-US Navy Nuke Factory
It just don't get better than that!

Excaliber 03-14-2007 02:32 PM

Big Boss,

...and how did a nice Mormon boy get mixed up with all this International intrigue?

quickjack 03-15-2007 07:47 AM

Fixture it right and you could machine an entire billet car on that mama!

Aluminum block

My god,
Why didn't you cross bolt the main caps??
What grade aluminum?
What did and how did you get the air bubbles out of the casting during the pour?
Cylinder wall thickness and how wide are the journals.
I'm interested in purchasing.
Thanks.

That explains why they bought the "ex-Naval research center" machinery. The billet cutting bits are actually made out of a top secret material...unobtanium. Their hardness and precision actually removes the air bubbles. ;)

Excaliber 03-15-2007 01:44 PM

 So when did David set up the foundry to cast the alloy ingots? Man these Kirkhams never stop!

Either you don't know much about engines, or you don't know much about reading :3DSMILE: .

Seriously, read through the thread and you'll find those answers.

big-boss,

We are always looking to get better. It is much easier to stand on the shoulders of giants!

Ernie,

Jack,

The thought has crossed my mind more than once...

Gotta run and put that baby together. More pictures soon.

David,

Any updates?

Inquiring minds want to know!:3DSMILE:

Kevin

David Kirkham 04-04-2007 01:23 PM

Kevin,

Our Windows XP disaster set us back a week and then we sold a bunch of cars...dang customers! :)

I had to get back into production to meet delivery schedules.

So we will get back on the project in the middle of next week. I also bought 4 more mills to keep up with unexpected demand this year. They will arrive shortly.

Justin Shaffer 04-09-2007 03:45 PM

David,

You mentioned intake manifolds in the future at KMS. Do you plan to do a webber manifold? Man I hope so!!! Getting the weight of a 427FE with Webbers down would be amazing!

David Kirkham 04-09-2007 03:51 PM

Justin,

I have thought several times about a weber intake for FE's that didn't weigh a ton.

David

Justin Shaffer 04-09-2007 04:03 PM

That's what I'm talkin about! I know you've got a million things going on...but...you gotta do it!:D
