Default Bad balancer?

Hi guys, I believe I may have a bad harmonic balancer & was wondering about a good shop to bring her to. I did a search and saw Tom's Motorsports mentioned. Wanted to get some input.

Thanks!!

Why do you think the balancer is bad?

I was under the hood watching the pulleys turn & my crank pully and balancer have a wobble, but not sideways, but an up an down motion...vertically. I do get some excess vibration at diffrent RPM's. I talked with another friend about it, & he agrees it MAY be the balancer. I know all the pulleys should be absolutely still while spinning. I have only 3 pulleys W/ a serpentine belt. The WP & alt look fine. The only other thing I could think of would be a problem with a crank bearing, but with as much movement as I am seeing, there would probably be more severe symtoms & oil leaking.

It could be that the pulley is drilled off-center. That happened to me with a brand new set of March pulleys and I had to send them back for replacements.

I just put that same possibility in a post on the BDR forum. It is very possible I suppose, and I have never really looked at the pulley since I have purchased the car. It could be this way since I got her!! I was under her a little while ago and took the belt off, checked the balancer and pulley by hand, & all seems tight. I will probably get her in to Tom's to make sure!

Thanks Doug!

If your balancer was bad... you'd know it! the car would wobble like crazy... AT idle! At anything higher than idle, it would feel like it was going to shake your car to pieces.

I've had a balancer go bad.. trust me, you know when it happens!

that may be an optical illusion created by the asymetric nature of the balancer. I think if you could actually see wobble you would feel a hell of a vibration and there would be no doubt about the cause.

What about the pulley moving in sync as well?
