Question LS427 with IRS?

I've been reading the LS website and it appears they do not offer an IRS for their cobras. Is that correct? If so, have any of you LS owners added IRS to your cobra?

I've often thought about a IRS for my LS Cobra. I asked Rich Anderson of Shell Valley about this. He said they tried one in his cars but, it did not make for a better ride. I was very suprised. A lot of modifacations would have to be made to the frame.

You would have to modify the whole rear section to accomodate the IRS.

I have had cars with both, defintely prefer the IRS!. If, it is a true double A frame design, not a modified swing arm design such as the Jag or older Vette. But, it would require a complete redesign and alot of fabrication to change your live axle over. Any thing is possible, have fun!!! John

Hey John, I agree. The frame design is totally different between the two rear ends. Retro fitting is not the answer. I do like the beefy frame that LSC has and the Ford 9", it's almost bullet proof. With all the rotating mass of a IRS can be a pain. It won't hold up to the hard launching abuse that I would give it. For road racing, the IRS is the way to go.

I have a lonestar with an 99 cobra IRS rear end installed by Lonestar. I have to say it handles great, but having a problem with a broken shock and have emailed lonestar 2 weeks ago and still have not got a reply. I am beginning to think this is the way it goes with them ,if you were not the original owner, they dont want anything to do with you.

I had no idea LSC had or, would install a IRS. The last time I talked with them, they said one would not work because of the way the frame is built ?
How much suspension travel do you have ?

Have you drove a LS Cobra with a solid axle to compare it with your IRS ?
Details,...........please.

At one time it was an LS option, a Ford Thunderbird unit was used.

Whichone...emails take forever to get a response from LS, but they are oversights with no malice! Call Brian and ask him about your issue instead of mailing! Whenever I have had a question, he has been readily available by phone...ALWAYS!

Good luck

Glyn

kevin, no I have not driven a solid axle LS. I came across this car and at a very good deal in my eyes so I went for it. I can not answer your question on travel due to the broken shock. If I am not careful when driving it, and I hit a big bump it gets a little hairy with the bouncing but not to much a problem with normal driving. Dave, my car uses a 99 mustang cobra rear end, I have heard some use the thunderbird, but due to a little extra under the hood I think they went to a cobra unit. Glyn, thanks for the insight but I have also tried calling with little to no help but I will try again. Having a great time with the car, an after looking at alot of different companies I feel that LS has one of the best cars on the market!
