If I buy a completed kit from out of state

If I buy a titled, registered, and plate car from out of state can I just register it in downstate NY or does it need a DMV inspection. If the car is registered as a 1966 can I just get the safety inspection? If it's registered out of stae as a replica but with a late model (ie 2004) year how do I get it inspected? Thanks in advance for your replies.
