I've always like the old adage 'If you can't do the time, then don't do the crime'. I would rather the punishments be on the harsh side as it would tend to keep people in line a bit better.

I don't think I'm making assumptions, only comparisons. See in our little town Armenians ARE foreign. It must be that cesspool effect we have on them. I've lived in Seattle, Beverly Hills, Alexandria LA, Salt Lake City, and Independence MO before moving here. Even Independence has a different feel to it than it does here. In this county most people voted Democratic because they were still pissed about Order #11.

All I'm trying to say, and it might be the same thing you're saying, is that communities make the rules that they feel best suits them. It seems the cub scout will get some punishment but a much lesser one and now the rule is being looked at in light of community standards. If Clovis believes their rule works then by all means that should be the rule they enforce. But that doesn't stop other communities from looking at it in light of their standards, and good naturedly making fun of it, much like you do about us back here.

And with that I will say no more about it as at some point in time you should stop arguing with a lawyer. You can't win.

BEAR, Del. — A Delaware first-grader who was facing 45 days in an alternative school as punishment for taking his favorite camping utensil to school can return to class after the school board made a hasty change granting him a reprieve.

The seven-member Christina School Board voted unanimously Tuesday to reduce the punishment for kindergartners and first-graders who take weapons to school or commit violent offenses to a suspension ranging from three to five days.

That is far more appropriate. Punishment for breaking the rules yes, but I am sure they weren't considering 6 and 7 year olds when they wrote the previous punishment guidelines.

As a 6 year old in Cub Scouts he would be a Tiger. Zach would not be allowed to carry that Hobo knife to any Scout Meeting until he earned his Whittling Card while having a Bear rank.

That Hobo knife he carried to school wasn't a harmless eating tool.It has a 3.5"' stainless blade.
I really am not sure why his parents would give a 6 year old a knife with a 3.5" blade to start with.

Of course, in Alabama, where 7th graders can light up a classmate by using a lighter to flame up some hairspray, they really are strict.

According to the Mobile County Public School Student Handbook and Code of Conduct, reckless endangerment is a Class C offense, punishable on first offense by a minimum three-day suspension and a maximum suspension of 11 days or more.

The kid who got burned is in the hospital with second degree burns for this little stunt. I'm sure the parents of the two seventh graders will be starting up websites in no time.

Some have talked about the old days. Thing I recall about growing up was corporal punishment...earned more than a few swats in my time. You got the message loud and clear, even if you weren't the one getting the swats.

The message from the last few days? Pure unadulturated crap and a perfect illustration of why our education system as a whole sucks.

This whole trend of getting a 'timeout' is really kind of silly without something more forceful to back it up. I used to like to take apart the appliances when I was that age - I would have used a timeout to think about how to get to the next one.
My teachers were never allowed to hit us, but a detention or a call home would more than likely result in some of that good ol'-fashioned physical abuse at home.

Parents really need to stop thinking that their kid is the exception to every rule.

We had Sister Mary "Marciano!" She had a left hook that would have dropped an elephant! Some of those Sisters could use a ruler like it was 'Excalibur.' [the sword, not the liberal] Others could fire a 98 mph fasteraser catty corner across a classroom.

Rules are there as a guide. Trying to simplify everything to black and white usually causes more harm than good. People have to learn to deal with the gray area.

As for the 6-year old attending reform school....no doubt he will learn a lot of previously un-thought of uses for his knife/fork/spoon "utentsil".

When you get back, I'd like to hear further on this. This is a most peculiar thing to say. Did you really mean that?

That statement reminds me of a couple I knew that had two toddlers. They told me that their child rearing policy was going to be: 'We'll ask our kids to do something once. If they don't do it, we'll do it for them.".

I can only imagine how they turned out.

I hear ya (Dan40). Our principal used to have our entire school (1st-8th) sit under the big oak tree out front...all 75 or so of us. The groundskeeper (pretty much the same as Mr. Greenjeans) would start whittling away on a rough piece of oak board while our principal would tell us the rules for the year, and about our sports programs [sic]. About the time he finished up (about an hour or so), the groundskeeper would hand him the paddle for the year...a nice handle had been carved in, along with some holes in the flat bizness end to leave some nice red dots on one's ass (some years...they'd whistle a bit as it sliced through the air, Stuka-style).

Mr. Douglas had an arm on him.
