Please add to the list "Nobody said it was gonna be easy" will be the theme Mike |
We hope.
Ron :) |
Well, someone in the senate could switch sides (to democrat). I bet there is some planning for that.
|
:(
I'll bet there is plenty of trying to buy another vote or two going on right now. Pelosi has to keep her promise that SHE would see that this bill passes. Ron %/ |
A Repub switch sides? Aint gonna happen (well, unless we do surgery to put their head back between their shoulders).
:) |
Remember when certain people on this forum were arguing in favour of a certain 'nuclear option'? Too bad it didn't go through, huh?:p:rolleyes:
Mike and Ron, I'm not pointing at you guys, 'cause I don't remember and don't care specifically who was arguing for it, but a bunch of people were. I would much rather have a GOP controlled Congress if a Dem is in the White House - they tend to keep each other a little honest and only manage to be moderately stupid instead of monumentally stupid the way an all DNC or GOP Congress and White House tend to get. Steve |
Not dead, merely delayed.
Interesting article poped up on MSN: http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com...investors.aspx We're a looong way from where we need to be, the Repubs are just as afraid of a rebuild as the Dims. Time for a hard reset, wipe the slate. |
Well you would think I, of all people, would know if someone here favored a nuclear option? I don't recall seeing that. The idea has been mentioned in some threads though, more like musing about the possibility. STILL on the table I would think? I think it's fairly unlikely, it would certainly doom a number of Dem's in the mid terms.
BUT, if Pelosi is dead set to get a bill passed at any cost, she might be willing to "off" a few Dem's in the process. They would only need 51 votes (I think that was the number) so they could "dump" nine or so Dem's right off the bat. I never took Cap and Trade or Copenhagen that seriously anyway, I never felt those two items got more than lip service, never got close enough to the vote stage. They could come back to haunt us, but not in the near future. |
Senator Pelosi Looks a Bit Shaken...
Just watched a clip taken today of Senator Pelosi giving a presentation at a Mayor's Conference.
Have got to say that for the first time I can remember (and I live in California), she looked a bit shaken. She usually keeps a very good card face, but for some reason today her guard must have been down. Wonder where Congressman Reid is today? |
It's worth noting that the number of people that think Obama is doing a good job is HIGHER than it was for Reagan at the end of his first year! "Potus" bashing is certainly nothing new.
|
The only nuclear options that I remember posting anything about concerned various countries, mostly North Korea and Iran. I guess I could go back and look through my posts but am not interested enough to get into that. I did say repeatedly that I would like to see all of those crooks out of office. Ron ;) |
Hmmm, I guess Steve need's to clairify WHAT nuclear option? :)
...there are so many, ranging from turning things into glass to making Dem's walk the plank! |
It was some political strategy that Repbulicans were considering using to finally get an up or down vote on Supreme Court justices (or the like). Dems were using some obscure rule to keep anything from happening. But unlike dems, repubs are not doing the same thing. I just can't remember the details.

If, in the face of the drubbing that was just handed out in Mass, they decide to go ahead with the Nuclear option, not only will they fail, every person who votes in favor of the nuclear option, will receive their reward the next time they come up for re-election.
By the way, it is not clear they even have 59 votes in the Senate anymore. Nelson seems to be backing down, as are others... |
lots of folks are back peddling now. This was the "out" that some wanted (like Jim Webb)
Hell, Obama is back peddling. Seems he wants to be reelected as well. |
Actually it was the Republicans that first came up with the nuclear option idea. If Demo's use it, there following a game plan already established! :)
fastd why do you think it would fail if the Demo's did use it? They only need 51 votes in that case and I think they would have enough. |
As I recall, the "nuclear option" as it applies to this discussion regarded the Senate rule requiring 60 votes to stop debate. As it is just a rule, the majority of the Senate could change it any time they want. The problem is that neither side wants to change the rule and risk being on the wrong end of a bunch of 51-49 votes in future years. As noted before, the Republicans threatened to use it regarding some judicial appointments, but they backed down. Some Democrats are talking about doing it this time, but I doubt that they will. I suspect that large numbers of Senators on both sides would oppose changing that rule.
|
And that leaves Pelosi and her I will pass this bill speech this morning standing where? Wouldn't it be great if she ticked off enough of the Democrats that they removed her form Speaker of the House. Sure would relieve a lot of people about the chain of command. Ron :D |
My personal "hope" is that the Dem's quickly pass the existing bill as is before Brown comes into office.
I didn't like the way it was going because it would further reduce an already watered down bill. I think it's good the way it is, I think the taxes and costs are well thought out. If it doesn't go through now we won't likely won't see any reform again until medical costs reach a crisis similiar to the recent implosion of our economy. We WILL have to deal with this issue at some point, all were doing is putting off the inevitable. |
It think the Nuclear Options would fail because:
1. Some Democrats would loose their nerve; and 2. if the other Democrats try to pass the biggest entitlement since Roosevelt by using the Nuclear Option, what we saw happen yesterday in Massachusetts will look like small potatoes compared to what happens the next time voters get to the ballot box. |
