Economic aftershocks from February's devastating earthquake in Chile are now rippling across Douglas County following the destruction of many Chilean sawmills and plywood plants.

Roseburg Forest Products has hired dozens of full-time workers in recent weeks to fill a gap in the supply of sanded plywood panels previously produced in the South American country and shipped to the U.S., a company official said Wednesday.

I have sold a few loads to RFP over the years, I find it amazing that Chile had such a impact on our local markets.

I think that with the world economy so entwined that anything that happens in almost any country is going to have some effect on other countries depending on what the country that has the problems produces and exports. Hopefully things will get better for your company soon.

Scott ... saw almost the same thing here in the South after Katrina and Andrew when you couldn`t get plywood or dimension wood as it was all going for rebuilding . Every GP , IP and Weyerhauser mill around was going full bore and they even opened up closed mills temporarily . I am a little surprised that the demand in Chile has spilled over to here . Guess it just goes to show we really are a global economy .
