India & World's Hottest Chili
This made me think of Joe and the Texas Chili crowd that likes to talk about how hot their chili is.

Saw that this morning. The Habenaro's I use are 300,000 Scoville units (measure of capsaicin), those things are 1,000,000 Scoville units, so I could effectively replace my 10 Habenaro's in my Salsa with 3 of these and have the same heat. I am sure it is a different flavor. Or, as in my last batch, replace the 15 I used with 4 1/2 of these.
While ours may not be as hot, we eat enough to make up for it.

I saw a Travel Ch. show about those damn things...even the toughest chili tasters were bought to tears when they tried them. Employees who work in processing plants where they make them into powder have to wear special protective gear.

i grew some jolokia's last season, i bought the seedlings and i had to sign a wavier releasing the garden center from liability if i ate them and died.
let me tell you they are suicidal hot....i freeze dried them and one pepper lasted for about 5 pizzas. there are some you tube vids i saw where it appeared the eaters had to go to the emergency room. just 1 freeze dried seed will light you up ...

Ever tried "Da Bomb" hot sauce. One drop is debilitating! I think the stuff runs something like 120,000 Scoville Units.

So, I have to ask "why would you eat something like this"? Same reason I drive a 500hp roller skate I guess

I don't know what it is, but I love eating hot foods. My Salsa is really hot (obviously from above) and I will kill a whole jar dipping chips in it at work in 1 work day. I also grill my "Jalapeno Poppers". and I will go through 40-50 peppers with each making 2 poppers at a BBQ. Yes I have help eating them, but there are rarely any leftovers. It was one of those things that once I started eating hot foods, it was never enough.

Myself I can't eat anything that is really hot. I was working in Pasadena one time and went into a Mexican restaurant there and I always just take a tiny taste of salsa before getting a big bite. That stuff was so hot a spoon would melt in it. So I just didn't say anything but ate the chips without it. A friend sit down and dipped a big heap of it onto a chip and I thought, he must be able to stand hot stuff a lot better than I can. Not so. They almost had to call a doctor for him. And I used to go to the chili cook offs they had here and would go around tasting the chili as i like it much milder than most people do. So I would only taste the milder ones.

I love hot food, but it also has to have flavor. Hot just for the sake of hot is worthless in my opinion.
There is a BBQ place here that has a hot sauce that can be added to your order. All it is, is hot. No flavor, and adds nothing to the food. Not worth it in my opinion.

I agree 100%. Must have flavor. Without it there is no point. Heat for the sake of heat is no good.
Ron,
It sounds like you just described my Salsa. I have had people in tears cussing after 1 bite and others running for water or anything to drink. Those that don't get to the point that they think they are going to die keep coming back. Even if they really can't handle the heat. They just can't stop themselves. Like I said, I agree with Silverback. Taste is a must.

I can't eat the really hot stuff anymore. Once it could not be too hot but those days are gone. Gettin' old I guess.
Way back in high school in a very mixed ethnic city, everyone would bring in hot peppers for lunch. All home grown in their family garden. Charlie and I always rode to school in a primered 50 Ford. One day I'm alone and in the first period class the teacher asked, "where's Charlie?" I answer, We had another hot pepper eating contest at lunch yesterday!" "Charlie lost?" the teacher asked. "No, He won!" I answer.

Dan,
A good friend of mine who owns a garage used to sell gas many years ago. He hired one of the local Mexican boys that we all knew to work in the afternoons so he could work in the garage with his Father. Ed, the Mexican boy would bring a small bag of peppers to work every day and eat them like candy. I decide to taste one once and it took two days for my eyes to stop running. Then he made a bad mistake. He fed one to Jack's big German Shepherd. It took a week before he could come around Kaiser again. His stomach must have been lined with iron.

LOL, I bet that dog was really pissed. I gotta make a bunch of my poppers tomorrow for my neighbor's birthday. When a friend says all she wants for her Birthday is the peppers on the grill, ya kinda gotta oblige.

I like the hot stuff but like a couple of others havesaid, it has to also have good flavor, I don like hot, just because it is hot. We do have a bottle of "Da Bomb" and that stuff is very strong. I think that the hottest thing I have ever eaten was a relatively clear broth type soup in a Northen Chinese restaurant. This stuff was liquid fire and it caught me competely off-guard.
I worked with a fellow many years ago that was from Dutch-Indonesia. He used to always eat really hot stuff and had done so since he was very young. I bumped into him a few years back and he told me that he had to get his butt relined as he had burned it right out over the years of eating all that hot stuff.

Wayne,
I found out the hard way that the Chinese has two types of food. There is a restaurant right across the street from the capitol in Sacramento and I went in there one day to eat and they asked me if I wanted Norther or Southern Chinese food. Since I didn't know the difference I figured I would get the Northern. I had to send it back and get the Southern as I thought I had bit into a live coal when I took the first bite. I think it took about two days before all the taste was gone and my eyes quit watering. No wonder they can stand that cold so well.

Way back, I was stationed at Lowrey , now long gone, in Denver. There was a bar/lounge [also long gone] in downtown that we used to start out at and sometimes finish at. The bartender would eat a bowl of Green Chili every night. The cook made it special for him. I asked him about it and he said this is too hot for you. And, of course, I said that so far there had never been anything too hot for me! The cook brings out the chili and the btender says get another bowl. He scoops some out from the same pot he is getting his and I taste. I felt like the soles of my shoes were delaminating and that was the coolest part of my body. I ACTUALLY could not breathe, don't know why I didn't pass out. And the bartender, a yanqui, just sits there spooning down a LARGE bowl of the napalm.
Was in Denver 2 months ago, EVERYBODY serves 'green chili' there now. Not the same stuff!!

A place called Jack n Grill in Denver covers everything with either a red chili sauce or a green chili sauce, your choice. I chose the green but asked to taste it first. The girl brought me out a little bowl. It was a little tangy at most. I asked if they had some hot sauce I could add to it. she said that the kitchen would spice it up for me. I said OK, have them do it. What I was served took my breath away and was a thousanth away from painful. I told the waitress they had really kicked it up. She said no, that was only the first level, and they have 4 more levels even hotter. So Its a place to try if you're really a hot hot hot nut. Like I used to be!!

Hot hot
I used to work for a chicken processor that produced the chicken pieces for KFC. One day while walking through the factory I noticed they were infusing the hot and spicy chicken with the secret hot stuff. I decided to have a tast of the liquid they were injecting into the chicken. I took a small amount about the size of a match head and placed it on my toung and OH MY GOD it was like I filled my mouth with sulphuric acid. I have not ever tasted anything that hot in my life it must have been pure capsisum oil. Vowed never to do anything that stupid again.
Cheers,
Bryan
