I saw that and I bet it is going to be a handful to drive and keep straight. But with the aero styling it may actually break the 1,000 MPH barrier.

At hose upper speeds, ground swells will rattle the thing to pieces (no place on earth is perfectly flat). But surely they have thought about this.

F18s can do Mach 1.8, which is about a 1000 mph.

Remember all the problems they had just trying to break the sound barrier. And that is no where nearly as fast as this. I would like to watch it but sure wouldn't want to be the one driving it.

i know, but didn't know if i could actually say that, and i wasn't going to convert kts. to mph, and the speed runs are at 37,000 ft with the assist of a descent, so on the ground.....big huevos, i don't think they can do it. just something to to do and eat up sponsorship money til they find something better.

An F/A18 will NOT do 1000mph near sea level, though in the late 60's a Phantom II did a speed run at about 1.2 mach at sea level which is close to 900mph. Mach 1.8 at 37000' is roughly 1170 mph. The speed of sound is slower up high.

I never mentioned what altitude it would do Mach 1.8. The power required to do such things at sea level is stunning. I have been at test sites where planes aproached .9 Mach at 1000 meters. You cannot imagine the sound! Brown noise is widely regarded as a myth, but those who have been near that kind of power have their doubts.

I agree. I was only mentioning the altitude because not everyone knows that the speed of sound is slower at higher altitudes and the fact that the air is much denser down low making it hard to go fast here. Hence the max speed records are different at sea level and 40k feet.

The B1B at full afterburner at transonic speeds will certainly make you think your bowels have come loose.

They might be aiming at 1000 mph, but if they only do 764, they are in the record book. Much the same people have done 763 already.
