I need to do the same thing. I think I got a deal on Norton Internet Security from Office Depot ($20) that I will probably try. There seems to be such an overload of bad stuff out there, that the time and sophistication of anti-virus software is getting to be a bit much. Still, the anti-virusware is often overcome.

Even the Netbook addition trialware on my netbook now, is slower than molasses. With all the daily cock-eyed slow loading program updates for Java and Acrobat etc, I'm tempted to surf with one of my other solid-state netbooks without anti-virusware and just re-install the OS every morning. It couldn't take much longer than daily updates and pokey incoming scans. There used to be a neat Windows 98 program that did just that. It automatically started over with an identical clean slate after every re-boot, but I forget what it was called.

If you are going to go with the whole security suite the Norton's 360 seems to be pretty good but it is big and takes space. I just use the AVG Anti Virus program as I already have firewalls and screening for the other things. I used to use McAfee until they came out with that 2010 version which was worthless. Maybe they have got it working now, but when it first came out it wouldn't update the virus definitions automatically and would hang the computer most of the time when you tried to update them manually. After uninstalling and re-installing it a few times I got rid of it.

Kaspersky 2011

I hadn't heard of it either til I got my new mucho muy coolo Vaio solid-state road warrior weapon. The guys at Best Buy gave me a free year.

I thought it was a new chess game. It has been great and works quietly in the background until you really need to know something.

Norton and McAfee have met their match and have been found wanting.

The Local Best Buy / Geek Squad boys sent me home with Trend Micro after both Norton and McAfee let me down. One month in and so far I've not had to go back dead laptop in hand. Kaspersky was equally recommended, but I too thought it was a chess game!

They will all meet their match early in 2011 when application whitelisting is released to the pro-sumer. Be watching for "AppShield."

I have never renewed Norton Anitvirus I have always found a better deal by buying a new one. With the instant rebate and prior version rebate I have often gotten another year for free. This is especially true if you look at Frys. If one is nearby you're golden, else shipping makes buying something from Office Depot or Sams a wash.

Ditto on the AVG

There is even a pretty good free version if you dont want to spend the money. The paid version protects a little more though.

Before you fork over the bucks for something at Frys or wherever, check to make sure your internet service provider doesn't provide you with free antivirus protection. Here where I live almost everyone has Comcast. All you have to do is go to their site, log in and download it for free. It is constantly updated and it never expires. I'm always amazed at how many of my friends that have Comcast are running old expired antivirus programs or are paying good money for the retail version of what they can get for free from Comcast.

Kaspersky works well, although they have had a few issues in the past few years with blocking certain web sites such as YouTube.

I use Comodo. It is free with about the best firewall you can get, Malware and Anti-virus.
