4 dollar gallon gas is here

Well 4 dollar gallon gas is here to stay for a while. Just when the weather is getting nice this happens. What should we do about it.:(

FatBoy 03-01-2011 11:11 AM

We're paying double that here in the UK. :(

I guess we have to bite the bullet and enjoy the car. That’s my vote. Or we can replace our engines with a 4 cyl and a sound machine that produces a throaty V8.

I am hearing that we will be above $5 per gallon up here before the Summer ends, but that is speculation. Some places are over $4 now but not all. Just drive faster and get there quicker and save gas.

It's a pity that the powers that be decide it is better to ship our money to the far east (holding us hostage) instead of developing our own internal resources and sending that money to our citizens. The support at $80/bbl would open exploration in oil shale fields that have huge reserves.

Don't tell me that there is not price manipulation going on. Gas prices went up 20c/gal here last week when Lybia (an insignificant producer) decided they wanted a new leader, at the same time that OPEC said they would cover the production, no problem. There is no logical reason for this except manipulation of the market.

This is not tough to deal with: Lots of companies make different sized wheels for these cars. Go get some 13" for the front, and then some 19" for the rear. Once you put them on, you will be getting MUCH better mileage because your Cobra will always be going downhill. See how easy that was? And I thought this was a forum for smart people. Duh.

That’s exactly what I was thinking!

It will most likely get worse. Two of my vehicles are diesel and the last time we had a run up like this I was paying $5.00 a gallon (about a dollar more than regular gas). People that don't have disposable income are the ones that are going to get hurt by this the most. Add coming inflation and the price of everything will get higher.

I hear the ecoboost engine is doing pretty good now, what do you think? V6 Mileage, V8 Power. But I like my V8 sound.

ACademic 03-01-2011 02:02 PM

I'm thinking of filling up the swimming pool with soil and grow my own corn. Then I can still my own alcohol, convert all of the cars to alky burners, and then drink whatever I don't burn. Simple! :3DSMILE:

rustyBob 03-01-2011 02:03 PM

If i converted my car over to run on beer could i still be arrested for drunk driveing.??
I know....why waste good beer.....

I thought that F150 w/ twin turbo V6 sounded pretty good as well until I learned it's 53 Freaking Thousand Dollars. 53 Freaking Thousand Dollars for an F150.

I'm getting ready to buy an '02 F250 with the 7.3L diesel for $12,900. I think I will come out ok on the ROI vs Ecoboost. **)

Rich_ACC 03-01-2011 02:19 PM

Raise a few cows, convert cow poo to methane, and still have a steak once in a while.

Plant some corn, run a still, and have corn on the cob w/ the steak and a drink.

Does that cover it?

lnfletcher 03-01-2011 02:34 PM

I suggest to those that come up and ask about our cars, tell them we'll take em for a ride for a tank of gas!
I'll give up my regular diet and eat oatmeal or mac and cheese before I give up driving my dream car!
My cobra gas money is not negotiable!
May have to walk to work to be able to drive the snake when I get home!

CobraDan 03-01-2011 02:51 PM

When gas hit over $100 per barrel gas was going up an additional 20 cents a gallon a day and it takes 6 months from the oil fields to the pump. I just saw that gas fell from over $100 to $97 so tomorrow I expect at least a 20 cent reduction in price or will that take 6 months to happen.

Just curious here....why is gas so expensive in the UK?

It seems like a LOT of crude is extracted in the north Atlantic, close to England.

Perhaps England does not have any refineries????? If not, why? It seems like the Brittish Isles would be a target location b/c of their proximity to the drilling areas, no?

Cheers from Dugly

Not sure I understand this, either. Isn't it easier to refine diesel from crude? I remember back in the '70's that diesel was quite a bit cheaper than gasoline, so what's the deal with the switch? I realize there are more "consumer" diesel vehicles on the roads these days, but it doesn't seem to me that there are enough to justify the price differential. Is it an increase in diesel use by the "big rigs"? I know that the agriculture industry has changed their land tillage procedures drastically, land that was typically plowed every time there was a rainstorm back in the '60's and '70's is now only plowed once a year (if that much), so agricultural use of diesel would have decreased.

What's up?

Cheers from Dugly

Just my 2 cents worth and not any endorsement of any parties policies:

I subcribe to the last man standing strategy.

North American is perhaps the only continent that can be self sustaining in the future - fertile lands, lot's of water, plentiful natural resources and the ability to generate all kinds of power (getting the tree huggers out of the way). But petroleum resources need to be protected as long as we can.

Nobody wants to pay higher prices, but I'd rather use up their petroleum reserves (as long as we can afford to) and save ours until we really need it.

But to do that we should be establishing all the capacity we can (creating jobs at the same time) so we're ready. It can take 10 to 20 years to develop the drilling, refining and nuclear plants we would need.

Just look at the changes the world has gone through over the past few weeks. Can anyone guess where we'll be in 10 to 20 years? (Read the Black Swan - no not the ballet story).

Greg

You'll get one guess and it's by design...
