Default Rental Car Type for Colorado, New Mexico Trip

Hi,

In July I am heading to Albuquerque driving to Santa Fe, then Durango Co, then Mesa Verde, Co and finally back to Albuquerque.

I need to rent a car and the practical side of me says go with the basic cheap mid-sized 4 door and then the adventurous side says go with a more expensive 4wd.

Not really knowing the area I don't really know if I need a 4wd.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

If you stay on the highways you will not need a 4wd.

There is a lot of off roading and some outstanding jeep roads around Durango, but you can rent jeeps for that when you get there.

you're coming in July. . . there's a slight chance of snow way up in the mountains, but not enough that I'd rent a 4wd.

I'd spend the extra couple bucks a day for a 'vert. 300 days of sunshine here

Thats good info. Now that I know there are jeep tours, etc.. I will just go with the basic rental car. Although topless is always nice.

Thanks for the info!

Ford Edge or Chevy Equinox, either is a nice step away from a econo box and generally have a lot of nice comfort features. Otherwise maybe you could find a Black & Gold Shelby Mustang??

While in Durango make sure you ride the narrow gauge train to Silverton. It's gorgeous ride. You should make reservations in advance though. It is a whole day to do it.

Default Gold and black Shelby......

It would be great to tour Durango in a Shelby. They are rare and have not been made since 2006, but we have one in our collection.......

If you plan on doing some trails get a Jeep. I rent a Wrangler everytime we go to Hawaii, and it's great being able to go on some of the trails. MPG in a Jeep won't be that good though.
