True Purpose Of Memorial Day
I copied this post off another site as I thought it was a good one and is very appropriate for the upcoming weekend and Monday. It was posted by Carl.
The True Purpose of Memorial Day
Many Americans have lost the true purpose of Memorial Day. It is not to celebrate the start of summer, but is about remembering those that gave their lives in service to our country.
Here is the poem written by John McCrae after the Second Battle of Ypres in Belguim which brings home the ultimate sacrifice.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
Take time to thank a veteran for their service and honor those that made that ultimate sacrifice.
