Default The new History channel series..Axe Men

On Sunday March 9th you can find out more about what I do for a living, the new series on the History Channel is the same format as Deadliest Catch and is called AxMen.

I know many of the crew members featured and have trained and worked with several of the guys. The community featured is my home town where I was 4th generation and served as mayor for 6 years.

While I am sure there will be some embellishments and added drama I hope they can show a bit of what some of the toughest guys I know can do.

You can view a bit of the trailer here.

Hey Scott, I've been thinking about you the last several days after seeing the Ad's for this new show. I was wondering if maybe you knew some of the guys, cool, I'm sure looking forward to seeing it.

I RAN from Oregon to avoid following in my familys footsteps, logging and all that entails. I got a belly full just working on our land and listening to the stories from family when I was growing up. To many relatives with missing fingers, limbs, bad backs, retired young, etc. Brutal stuff in the woods, setting 'chokers' wasn't high on my list of things to do for a living. Run baby, RUN!

Scott

When I first saw that I thought about you. I am looking forward to the show.

Looks dangerous, makes me feel like my lumber is cheap!

Scott,

I have been looking forward to the show. The new equipment they have now is amazing. I worked one summer here when logging was big as a choker setter. Hard work and I thought dangerous.

Being a young kid at the time and in real good shape, I took a job as a choker setter. Well they had their fun with me that day.

Just to keep the story short, at the end of that first day I told them that I quit. Don't even bother sending me a check for that one day's labor. I was just going to chalk it up to a learning experince. They all laughed and said they would play nice from then on, but in all honesty, they could have killed or maimed with their "fun".

Silverback,

I out lasted you as a choker setter. I worked at it for a week before they promoted me. Same pay, just a lot easier and less dangerous job. They made me a spotter for the overhead cable system as some of the logs had to be picked up by them and lifted out of the canyons. I never saw any work while I was doing my short time at that job that didn't have a great chance for someone getting hurt badly. I did see one cat tumble down into the canyon and what is left of it is still there today.

Scott,

I don't think so, it is not fun any longer.

23 years is enough for me.

I noticed the show didn't have any bow saws?. From my experience, once you use a bow saw, you'll throw that bar in the trash. You need to respect it because they are dangerous.

Bow saw?

They only use those around here to cut Christmas trees, the average length of a power saw bar here is 32" but I have run them as long as 72".

We don't have trees around here that require bars that long, the few times I use mine, it's cleaning up after storms.

Scott,
I saw the first episode. I think that is a tough way to make a living.

It looks like injuries are just a part of everyday life in that field.

Great show! I was really missing the mountains of my home state and feeling a little down, until it started raining and the loggers were talking about the wet, cold and miserable, then I felt all better. Sure is beautiful there, Hawaii aint got nothing on Oregon. Maybe I should reconsider a move home (let me know when it stops raining).

That converted Sherman Tank, now THAT was classic Oregon ingenuity. You have everything you need, and you need everything you have, nothing goes to waste.

Ernie,

Oregon is like Seattle in places. It only stops raining to gather up more water for a harder rain. I really loved Washington but the continual rains kept me from staying up there. But they do make for really beautiful and green country. And without all of the lava.
