Burn Hydrogen in your Car. Does this really Work?

OK,
With fuel for the diesel at $4.00 a gallon we have to start looking open minded at ideas. I saw on TV the other day where some guy had made a devise that he put on his car that he drove from LA to New York with only 21 gallons of WATER!

I have been intrigued by this since I saw it and thought I would see what I could find.

QUESTION:

For all you mechanics out there, does this or could this really work without cratering the engine? This seems simple enough to try.

Take your pick, I like the idea but much improvement needs to come.

Steve, you can do this experiment at home, about as basic as you can get......

Perry,

Good links and interesting reading. Now if our country would just start to build geothermal power plants. They have did around three or four studies over the past years up at Lassen which is very active and I don't see why they couldn't build a plant there as they had ample access to steam and heat to run one.

I am no engineer, so I am not sure what the possible outcome will be. But I am also not hindered by knowing what the possible outcome will be.

I see a few problems with the idea, but I think I can overcome them reasonably quick.

Hell, I am going to give it a try and see what happens.

4RE KLR 03-18-2008 08:34 AM

The system I think I will work on for now will be a combination of Fuel and Hydrogen. I don't think I am ready to takle replacing the fuel tank on the truck.

If I can make it get 40% better fuel mileage that would be on avereage 29.40 MPG on the highway. Not too bad I suppose for a 4 X 4 F250.

I do not like the way they did the drilling for the ventury suction to work so I think I will try to come up with another idea for that.

The one problem with hydrogen is storage, for example: if your familiar with oxygen acetylene tanks?, hydrogen gas will leak from these tanks because the atoms or molecules are smaller than oxygen and acetylene. I read this somewhere and I could be mistaken?.

Okay, if you place an electrode at one end of a tank and an electrode at the other end, pass current into the water, the H2O will separate leaving O at one end and H at the other. You take that, using a brass or aluminum pump ( anything that does not spark ) and you can pump that gas anywhere...like into the carb.

Perry has brought up a point, storing the gas. Typically you can buy 4500 PSI carbon fibre tanks for combustable gas storage and fill them.

You need to remember, Hydrogen needs to recombine to burn, so it is more like gas than O. O will explode.

If you happen to have a side car, junker or a car that you are willing to experiment on, you can convert it to burn hydrogen. I would be reserved to use my daily driver as my first victum.

:D :D :D

Tru,

I agree about getting an old car to test it on, but here in this state that would also be a problem as they would claim you are modifying it and that is illegal. I think that I saw where they also made some kind of stainless tank that would hold the hydrogen molecules, but I may be wrong about that.

Ron :)

Here is a small starter kit......

From the web site, http://www.hydrogen-boost.com/alternatives.html

We still maintain that a hydrogen generator alone is not likely to produce a major increase in mileage (see http://www.hydrogen-boost.com/savefuel.html) regardless of what our competitors will claim.

Seems like their $1,000.00 complete kit contains more than just a hydrogen generator. Something about a fuel heater and additional components as well. From this I would assume that it does indeed take more than just a hydrogen generator to 'get r done'.

427 S/O 03-18-2008 01:35 PM

Of course, had it been that simple you wouldn't have thousands of DIY'ers around the country working on improvements?. I though you were over in the O camp?.

Perry, just taking a break, but I'm watching you like a hawk!

Thanks
This is the type of system I am wanting to build.

I am not looking to build one that stores hydrogen, under pressure.

Yea, but if it only cost a few dollars to make it work, and it only increases the mileage by 5%. It is better than nothing...right?

4RE KLR 03-18-2008 06:25 PM

It has been raining real bad here all day and I have not been able to do much on it but I am still doing the homework right now.

I agree that if it worked like some say everyone would be doing it. But even if it only increases the MPG a little I think it is worth the effort. At least I am willing to try something. Better than sitting on my ass and complaining about the cost of diesel.

At least I think so.

Excaliber 03-18-2008 06:33 PM

Well it's hard to say what a 5% increase means. It means a lot more to a guy getting 10 mpg than 35 mpg. You gotta do the math to calculate the break even point on the expense and THEN hope it still works to see some real world savings following that. A fascinating idea all around.
